NEWS HEADLINES OF THE YEAR show a surprising amount of variety. The year 1944 locally, was one of great decision and revision. It was one in which spectacular events like the third observance of Bataan Day, and the frequent war loan drives were given prominent positions besides other naive things like the youngsters' Easter egg hunt, and stories of unique souvenirs sent home from the various fighting fronts. During 1944, news of servicemen came into sharper focus than ever before, and numerous letters in youthful scrawl, were brought to the Herald as exhibit "A" by proud mothers from their progeny in service. News of the new Vaughan hospital and its effect upon the community were recorded, and so were the many athletic events at Proviso high school. The year 1944 was characterized by events of world shaking importance-like the invasion of the Philippines by General MacArthur's men-and its repercussions were felt here at home.
