Hill, Michael Carlin, Thomas, 1789-1852 Illinois. Governor (1838-1842: Carlin) Pardon Trials (Manslaughter) Circuit courts--Illinois Sangamon County (Ill.) |
Description | Petitioners ask that Governor Carlin pardon Hill, who was convicted of manslaughter in the March term, 1842, at the Sangamon County Cirucit Court, and was sentenced to one year and ten days in the state penitentiary. Petitioners state that Hill is "an elderly, respectable, and peaceful citizen" and was "highly provoked, by oft repeated and long continued abuse to strike the final blow...and had no intention of killing..." The first page of the petition is signed by the 12 jurors in the case; Calhoun and Matheny, Court Clerks, certify the 12 names as the jurors. Citizens of Springfield and Sangamon County add an endorsement and signatures. Endorsed April 2, 1842; filed April 7, 1842.
