Saving Huntley's Memories

1. Where were you born?
Union, Illinois
2. How long has our (or your spouse's) family been in the area, where was the family farm or home located?
We moved to Huntley, IL. March 1st, 1945.
3. What was family life like when you were growing up?
We were poor farmers.
4. How did you celebrate holidays?
With a little Christmas tree with candles on it. Also an apple tied on for good health.
5. What effect did the Depression, WW1, WW11, have on your family?
We were poor, but always had potatoes, eggs and milk.
6. What changes in life, as to technology, fashion, finances, etc., have made the biggest difference in your life?
Having electric come to our road.
7. What kind of farm do (or did) operate?
I was married in 1939. In 1945 my husband and family moved to Huntley. Harold my husband became the Herdsman for Clanyard #1.
8. Did you raise livestock? Other animals? Poultry?
Cows, chickens, sheep to show at the fair.
9. Where did you shop for your farm equipment, feed, clothing, other food, etc?
Huntley Farm Store, later called Buck Bros.
10. What kind of help did you have? Full time, part time? Family members?
Family members, plus college students during the summer.
11. What equipment, machinery or utilities did you find most necessary?
Milking machines and tractors.
12. What was your daily schedule like on the farm? In the summer? Winter? Spring? Fall?
Days started at 5:00am milking, then work in the fields till lunch time, eat and go back to fields or barns then milk again at 4:30.
13. What recreation did you enjoy?
Bowling, picnics, kids and the carnival put on by the fire dept. and town.
14. Do you remember very special times, weather events, world affairs, etc. that made a big difference in your life?
Swimming at Grafton Township in Crystal Lake. Weather events were the big snow falls we had and pulling vehicles out of the snow banks, world affairs and WWII.
