VAomi nm msrtasf rAsutsniB — nx. JUNS Se, I960 TKe Editor Speaks «>» • ^ HI NEIGHBORS: Next week will probably he. the most haEardous in the year. This will be the 4th of July weekeni}. There will be a large Influx of people from Chicago coming out to our area to bask in the sun on the beaches of Lake Geneva or Crystal Lake, or Just to get a breath of fresh country air. The roads will be crowded and very dangerous to drive on. Many of us will be going out to see a fire works display. Unfor¬ tunately Huntley does not have such a display. However, there are many fine fire works displays around the general area. There is one in Crystal Lake and one In Dundee and one In Wrtodstock. All of these towns surround the general Huntley area and are easily reached by roads which are not travelled by the average tourist from Chicago. Traffic safety is something which we stress very much at the Farmside. Just before we started Huntley's tittle neWapaper there was a five or six car collision Jnst outside of town. Tonr editor does not know) the details of this colllslOD having only heard akont It and read about It In the newspapers. But he has seen many G*reless accidents which could have been avoided had a little road courtesy or alertnea* been applied by the driver. Many ef these accidents happened on tlw outskirts of Woodstock. Most of them were caused hy tlie driver b^ng In too much of a hurry to get someplace or speeding to Aow off for somebody else. Every time there is an acddeat a very expensive i^ece of property Is either wrecked beyond repair or else marred perma¬ nently. Tills expensive i^ece of equipment oooU even be your body or. that of a loved one. Sometimes tt is better to leave a Uttle more time to get where we want to go or If we can't do that be relaxed and periiapa a few minutes late. When one fignres the inveatnent one has In an auto- blle, the minutes one la late or the few doUars one might lose se^ meaningless In comparlsMi to the loss of time which occurs whenever an accident takes place. One not only misses the appointment or event which he Intended to go to but he stands a possibility of being laid up in the hoqiital for a long time, where he cannot be oat maMiic a living or enjoying himself. The traffic signs and the rules of the road which are posted and which we should all at least know, are designed for a purpose. That purpose being to protect our lives and the Uvea of Innocent people who we might hurt with a careless act. Practlc ecourtesy this week¬ end, neighbors. Avoid accidents or situations where accidents could occur whenever possible. The expense Is Just too great. Along with the Fourth of July, it is traditional to have Are works. As I have mentioned In the past editorials we get a lot of news over the desk. Sometimes it is good news aad sometimes It is garbage. This week we received a release from the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Illinois law makes the sale and lise of fire works Illegal. That is the reason displays are put on by professionals who handle explosives every day of their lives. This week is the Prevention of Blindness Week. In 1959, out of 64 fire works accidents In Illinois, 17 resulted in eye Injury. One of these was caused by sparklers. Sparklers, as anything flammable, should be kept out of the hands of young children. They are dangerous and to a young child the bright sparks and flashy colors of sparklers and fire works do not have a meaning of danger to them. Thus they are not afraid of being burned or seriously injured. To the extremely young child the fire cracker or sparkler that Mommy or Daddy gave them to play with, they feel that It cannot possibly hurt them. In the hands of a teenager fire works can be very dangerous. There are many Jokes wihlch can be played with fire works and to the unsuspecting victim of these Jokes it can be quite dangerous. A few weeks ago a fire cracker was placed near the tank by Ceniey's fertilizing plant. The results were amusing for the people watching but Conleys thought the entire fertilizing idant had blown up. It threw quite a scare into them. If you see, neighbors, or have the opportunity to prevent fire works or explosives from getting Into the hands of young people who do not realize the danger of fire works, try to keep this illegal form of recreation out of their hands. Have a safe and sane Fourth of July. See you next week. UntU then, HAPPY DAYS. YOUR EDITOft NeiPTS Hoviiid Says Safety begins at home. Stay off the highways during holiday rushes. There is plenty "doing" near home. HUNTLEY FARMSIDE ESTABLI^IED 1960 VOLUME 1—NO. 13 Published once a week at Main Street, Himtley, Illinois, Phone 5621.
