THE HUNTLEY FARMSIDE-ILLINOIS ROUTE 47 IS NOW BEING WIDENED THURSDAY, APRILS, 1978 HANSENS FIRST WITH NEW BANK CARD PROGRAM DUNDEE.ILL...House Min ority Whip. Bruce Waddell: (R-Dundee) has announced that constrution will begin today on the widening and resurfacing of a 5.17 mile stretch of Illiois Rt. 47 between 111. Rt. 176 and Huntley, calling the road project 'welcome news to every motor ist in the 33rd District.' "This road improvement pro ject will make certain this section of highway is as safe as other heavily travelled roads ini Illinois,' Rep. Waddell said. 'Unfortunatly we have not beenj able to make that claim in the past.' Rep. Waddell said that $1.2 million contract for the project was recently awarded to the Lake Bluff firm of Peter Baker and Son, who submitted the lowest bid to the 111. Department of Transportation. Construction is scheduled to be completed by' August 31. 'Route 47 is one of the most heavily travelled roads °m our area,' the 33rd District Legislat or said. "The resurfacing will eliminate cracks and potholes that impede the safe and easy flow of traffic along this stretch of highway.' 'It seems that in the past the upkeep of our area roads has lagged behind that of other areas ofthe state,'Rep. Waddell added. 'This project is an indication that we're finally getting our fair share of transportation dollars to im prove our deteriorating high ways- and none too soon.' Rep. Waddell said final details of the widening and resurfacing project were worked out in a meeting between the contrators and the Dept. of; Transportation last week. 'I am pleased all the terms of the contract have been agreed upon and that constrution is underway,' he said. 'The coiii petition of this project schould make this part of Rt. 47 one of the safest sections of highway in the state.' 'With the constrution begin ning today, area residents may experience some temporary in convenience, but I am sure it will be outweighed by the road's additional safety when the project is finished in August,' Rep. Waddell concluded. SEN. SCHAFFER ON PRIMARY DAY State Senator Jack Schaffer, R-Crystal Lake, has announced that he will support passage of legislation to move the Dlinois primary election from March to May. 'The horrible weather con ditions under which the recent primary was conducted proves conclusively again that the election date schould be chang ed,' Sen. Schaffer stated. He continued: 'I firmly believe both the voting public and candidates seeking office want the primary held later in the year. The winter we have just experienced made it almost impossible for candidates to wage effective campaigns where personal com munication with their constit uents could be achieved. 'The weather leading up to the election day was probably partially responsible for the extremely low turnout of per sons who voted in the primary throughout the state. We need to get these elections out of snow, holding them at more sensible time.' Illinois had the earliest prim ary election in the nation this year. Sen. Schaffer said there are other compelling reasons to change the primary date. 'Voter s and candidates would all be better served if the primary and general elections were closer together. Cutting the lenghth of campaigns would reduce their costs and increase public inter ests.' he indicated. D There are at least a dozen bills pending in the legislature that would change the primary to dates ranging from May to Septenber, Schaffer noted. A giant combination Visa/Master Charge Card was presented to Hansen Heating & Plumbing of Huntley, Illinois by Wes Courier, Asst. Vice President of the State Bank of Huntley. Hansen's was the first area business to join the banks new bank card program. Pictured left to right are Wes Courier; Harold Hansen, President; Oliver Hansen, founder of Hansen Heating & Plumbing and Warren Hansen, Vice President. 'There is alot of support for a May primary. The weather would be favorable and holding it before before the vacation season begins would heighten participation,' Sen. Schaffer said. 'There would be some com plications for legislative candid ates in that May is one of the busiest months of the year for lawmakers. However, by alter ing our own schedules this problem could be overcome.' Schaffer said he will support an attempt to get one the bills calling for a May primary election date out of committee and before his General Assemb ly for consideration this spnng. Senator Schaffer also expres sed a desire to hear from his contituents as to exactly how they think when the primary should be held. An earlier poll conducted in the 33rd legislative district by Senator Schaffer indicated that the public was almost evenly divided between a March primary, and a May primary and a September prim ary. That poll was conducted before the March 21, 1978 primary and it is possible that many people have changed their minds since then.
