It's prob^ly the most common New Year's resolution the real question is, how? "There are all kinds of miracle diets out there -- but deep inside, we all know permanent weight loss occurs the 'old-fashioned' way, by eating less of the wrong kinds of food and exercising more," said Jenny Kregel, pharmacist in Milwaukee for Walgreens, the nationwide drug chain. Diet aids sometimes provide a physical or psychological boost to a dieter, the pharmacist continued, but these should be used with a weight-loss program of both diet and exercise. A balanced diet "Fad diets can harm your health, and they're not effective m the long run," said Kregel. "Often, you don't lose just fat -- yrou lose proteins and muscle mass as well. And since fad diets don't help you change your eating habits, you almost inevit¬ ably gain weight again. ' 'What you gain is fat, not the proteins or muscle mass you lost. Losing weight gradually is best - your goal should be no more than one pound a week." Remember what you leamed back in grade school about the Four basic food groups? Every day, health experts say adults should eat the following: Meat group (two servings) Dairy products (two servings) Breads and cereals (fouro servings) Fruits and vegetables (foui servings) "There's no substitute for 'eating smart' - especially when you're watching your weight. However, vitamins are a good supplement to any diet and a great health investment," noted Kregel. "For example, Walgreens most complete vita¬ min. Super Aytinal, provides 12 .vitamins and 13 minerals and ;x}sts less than six cents a day." Exercise Dieters who lose weight lose both fat and lean tissue. Dieters who also exercise lose weight mostly as fat. "Exercise doesn't just help yoM lose weight -- it also can improve your health," Kregel said. "In overweight people, exercise appears to reduce high blood pressure, lower blood :holesterol levels, and improve 7lood sugar levels in diabetics, rhese changes reduce the risk jf heart disease." Diet aids There are many nonprescript- on aids for dieters on the [narket. Products like Slim-Fast supply daily nutrients in "milk¬ shakes" " a major benefit to lieters tempted to dive into the lext restaurant for the real JiingI "Other products are designed 0 minimize hunger pangs." .' Many consumers have found a good buy in lighting to be the new soft white light bulbs from Sylvania. The bulbs are avail¬ able in wattages ranging from 25 to 100. "Long life" incandescent bulbs are not energy savers.
