OFFICE PHONE 312-669-5621 SERVING THE PEOPLE OF HUNTLEY SINCE 1960 254 P<' copy Board of Education Meeting Third Graders Present Lincoln Play The regular meeting of the Board of Education of School District #158, Huntley Consolidated Schools, Huntley, Illinois was held in the High School building on January 21, 1988 at 7:30p.m. The ineeting was called to order by the Vice President at 7:30 p.m. Upon roll call the following members answered present: Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Schadt, Mr. Greve, Mr. Freeberg, Mr. Crabill. Absent: Mr. Heavey, Mr. Bauman. All present joined in the pledge to the flag. 1. Mr. Crabill moved, Mr. Freeberg 2nd to approve the minutes of the December 17 regular meeting as written. 4 yeas - 0 nays; motion carried. 2. J-:' , .¦^""'' Th 1* *> '- >> Ji' ¦* "^ '4 ^ I For the past eighteen years, Mrs. Legee and the third graders have been showing the people of Huntley a few of the highlights of Abraham Lincoln's life with the annual "Lincoln Play" This year there was a difference. Thanks to Solarcrete Energy Efficient Builders, every student in the third grade wore a period appropriate costume. All of the boy's costumes were made historically correct by Naomi Fettes of the White Oak Emporium in Union. Several other helping hands aided in the completion of this project. ' The third graders did a fine job with the performance. Many hours must have been spent practicing for this event. Several performances were given. They traveled to Woodstock to the delight of the residents of a nursing home and performed twice in the grade school, once during the moming of February 11, and again on Monday evening, Feb. 15. The main characters were: Narrator-Sarah Ryan ic Jessica Kittel, Abe Lincoln-Pat Kearns, Mother-Angie Diedrick, Father-Scott Dvorak, Robert-Ryan Christiansen, Ted-Mark Skradski, Soldier, 1-Scott Ruth, Soldier 2-Matt Zimmerman, Soldier 3-Mike Kresal, Sally-Jackie Dallaska, Johnny-Aaron Mobley, Douglas-Peter Konopka, Mary Todd Lincoln-Jessica Kittel, Indian-Bryan Borchart. Lions News The regular meeting of the Huntley Lions Club was called to order on February 9th, 1988 by President Don Tessmer at 7 p.m. at the Ameriean Legion with 26 members and one guest in attendance. The meeting started with everyone singing "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree" and "God Bless America". Pledge was led by Lion Norm Brettschneider and grace was led by Lion Del Borhart. Guest for the evening was John M. Foerster who was the guest of Lion Gary Schultze. . After a delicious turkey dinner by the Legion, minutes were read, and with a motion by Lion Kerry Ellison and second by Lion John Mattingly, the minutes were accepted as read. Treasurer report was then given and a motion to accept the report by Lion Bern Jelek and second by Lion Darell Gurnett. The report was accepted. Motion carried. Committee Reports: Basketball: Games are Continued on page 15 Penguin's Club Ladies Day Ride by Molly Viita The Huntley Penguin's finally liad their annual Ladies Day ride on Feb. 14, 1988, Valentines Day. The club has tried for the last three years to pull this off but mother nature didn't cooperate. Thanks to the snow last week eleven brave women and four brave men showed up at 12:00 at FS parking lot. We had two groups. A fast group lead by Jim Brewer and Jim Dall and a slow group lead by Chuck Olson and Herb Glissendorf. The groups left and headed to the VFW hall in Hampshire. From there we went to the warming house at the Rutland Forest Preserve. There Lee Mansfield & John Oliver had hot chocolate ic coffee waiting for us. We then returned to the American Legion Hall. The men of the club then served us dinner and drinks. The waiters were Mark Schule, Continued on page 13 American Legion Auxilliary Notes Planning Commission Minutes February is Americanism month. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are honored - George Washington being the first President and Lincoln, the sixteenth. Essays on "I Am Proud To Be An American" from Grade 7 through high school - best in categories 1-2-3 - will be awarded at our April meeting. Patriotic Conference to he held in the Gold ^oom of the Americana Congress Hotel in Chicago on Friday, March 11th. Unit President and members of the Auxiliary are asked to attend. The session will focus on Americanism and National Security, and will begin at 9:00 a.m. We are in need of four Juniors to get a 100% membership. Membership Chairperson, Ariene Mattingly - 669-3181. Help us get that 100%. Two members attended the gift wrap at the Elgin Veterans Rehab Center - its a rewarding program - makes you feel good to be a participant. Community Service Chairperson, Mary Lou Hardy, has a rewarding service, and has been doing it for years - visiting nursing homes, never empty handed, and remembering the service men on active duty. Its the families' responsibility to notify these chairpersons if they have a shut-in or one in a nursing home - Sunshine Chairperson, Marilyn Eckman for shut-ins or those in hospital. All chairmanships are posted on the bulletin board at the entrance door of Legion home. Scholarships are available through the Legion or Auxiliary. Those members of the board present were Noel Hansmann, Thomas Jurs, and Rol>ert Schachtner. Also present was Mayor Dhamer. The minutes of the January 11, 1988, were read. Mr. Hansmann moved to accept the minutes as read. Mr. Jurs seconded. Motion carried. Mr. Mercer entered the meeting at this time. Mayor Dhamer asked Mr. Jurs if he works for Realty World, to whieh Mr. Jurs Replied that he did, therefore, Mr. Jurs could have no input into the subject of Realty World's request at this meeting. Chairman Rohlwing read the agenda. The first order of business was presented by Mr. Orville Brettman of Realty World. He was speaking on behalf the owners of Realty World, James Bohlander and Herbert Mitzlaff. Mr. Brettman then read a petition submitted, attached hereto as Exhibit A, to the Planning Commission which states Realty World's request for a change in zoning from R-2 to B-3 for the parcel of land on the northweA comer of Route 47 and North Street, commonly referred to as the Gariieb House, for the purpose of a branch office of Realty World - Town ic Country. Mr. Brettman also presented drawings of awnings they would like to add to the house in the next year or two. Mr. Mercer moved that the Huntley Planning Commission recommend to the Huntley Zoning Board of Appeals and Huntley Village Board a change in zoning from R-2 to B-3 for the Gariieb house on the corner of Route 47 and North Street in Huntley.
