'^'- pw jllll^ ^^^^^m Dennis Pfaff and his son, Teddy, at the Writing To Read Computer Center Open House at the Grade School Tuesday, Oct. 1st. By Barb Schmidt Thursday evening, October 1, 1991, was a special evening for the first grade students of Huntley Elementary School. On this particular evening, an Open House to view the WTR Computer Center was held for the students and their parents. What is WTR? "Writing to Read is an instructional program designed to teach beginning readers how to read through their own writing." This program was developed by John Henry Martin, who combined learning principles and computer technology to help students leam more efficiently. This year's first grade class of Huntley Elementary is the first detss in the District to use the Writing to Read Computer Center since it was instilled this past summer by IBM. The WTR Center is a work area which has five learning stations. At these various learning stations, students practice specific skills and work with instructional materials. The WTR Center makes efficient use of computers and other instructional equipment, which provides students with an unique place to leam and practice newly acquired skills. The children also enjoy using computers, which makes learning a fun experience for them. At the Open House students were allowed to take their parents from station to station in the Computer Center, and show them what takes place at each station. We certainly do appreciate the large turn-out at the Open House. We hope that each and everyone of you who attended went away with a better knowledge of the program and the concept of how it works. With only just a bit more than a month into the school year, progress can already be seen in many of the students. This Open House was a special and important event to those students who use the WTR Computer Center. We're so glad that so many parents were able to share this time with their children. Many thanks to the PTO for the wonderful refreshments provided for the evening. Fire Prevention Week See Page 14 ... CHAnGE VOUR BATTERY National Newspaper Week See Page 4 ...
