PEARCE DIES SUDDENLY AT GROVEIiAND CAL. Word reached Stockton early last evening from Groveland ot the death there ot Mrs. J. W. Pearee, who had been taken seriously ill a week ago while traveling near Carl Inn en route to Yosemlte Valley. She was rushed to the Oroveland hospital, wbere a Stockton physician In ans¬ wer to an urgent telephone eall hur¬ ried to attend ber. It was found necessary to operate Immediately. The sufferer seemed to rally nlcefy from the operation and hope was held out tor her recovery until a sudden turn last evening in her con¬ dition caused her to sink rapidly into death. The news ot Mrs. Pearce's passing will bring a distinct shock to social and club circles of tbe city. In which she Occupied a prominent and be¬ loved part. Possibly no woman in Stockton In so short a time as was Mrs. Pearce's residence here gained more sincere admiration and warm trlends In the community than sha. She was active In Christian work whenever health permitted. Of broad sympathies, Mrs. Pearce refused to confine herself to even a cultural rut, but with equal gener¬ osity lavished ber interest upon tho philanthropic, social and educational phases of city life. She was actively interested in the Camp Flre Olrls' work and- a never failing friend ot the organization members, both In¬ dividually and collectively. Bom In Kentneky. Mrs. Laura Benclnl Pearce waa born In WIckllff, Kentucky, 39 year) ago and graduated trom Bishop Rob¬ ertson Hall In St. Louis; also at¬ tended Llndenwood. Her marriage to Hr. J. W. Pearce oceurred In the Istter dty October 18, 1906. An only child. Miss Cleone Loaise Pearce, survives, besides the bus- band. From the east the Pearees re¬ moved to Sacramento, California, where they made tbeir home until coming to Stockton some eight years ago. The husband is a member of the architectural firm of Davis-Hel- ler-Pearce.—Stockton Dally Inde¬ pendent, Stockton, Calif., July 1. Mrs. Pearce visited In Flora aev¬ eral times at the home of her mother- in-law, Mrs. Jnlla B. Pearce, on Eaat Second street. Sbe is remembered by many ot our people as a woman ot wondertul intellect and ability. GRANGERS HAVE OOOD TIME. At the last regular meeting ot the Grange twelve candidates were given the 3rd end 4th degrees by a spe¬ cially selected team for the occasion, who p';t on a pretty drill, headed by a flag bearer, everybody carrying flajje in honor of July 4th. "They then seated the officers with cere¬ mony appropriate, and proceed 3d with the initiation. After the business was completed there were special songs by O. D.
