Carl Banhart and wife visited Ira Ritter and family Sunday. The Epworth League social at Les¬ le Valbert's was well attended. About 65 Or 70 persons were present. The evening was spent in singing and prayer and a shout program was ren¬ dered. Pop corn and home made candies wKre served. All went away, feeling they had had a very enjoyable evening. Perley Lee helped L. G. Hale haul corn from Flora. Mr. Hale had a car load shipped trom the north. That linotype In the J-R office Is a wonderful piece of mechanism but the pesky things pulls off some won¬ derful stunts. Sometimes ' takes spells of stuttering and unloads a lot of stuff no one can make out, then again sometimes makes us say things we never thot of. Last week It put yours truly on record as saying "Perley Lee In setting a gate post got his finger mashed and the neighbors got htm up some wood." what we said was that "John Brinkiey while help- ilng Perley Lee set a gate post, got his finger mashed and the neighbors got Mr. Brinkiey up some wood. C. S. Marshall is trying his hand at batching, his better half having been called to Beardstown on account of the serloni; condition of her grand¬ son, Glenn Marshall, who took sud¬ denly 111 last Mondy night. Arthur Cook helped Dan Bryan butcher a beef one day laat week. We get pretty tired of our own cooking, as we never was sn expert chef, se we accepted an fnvitatfon from our neighbor Bryan Sunday morning for breakfast, also dinner with our old friends, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Pemberton, and say, how we did enjoy those feeds, hut we doubt very much If we can go as long on thAte two hie feasts as Elijah did,, viz. forty days and forty nights, alto they were excellent. Dan Bryan, wife and son, Edgar. motored to Flora Sunday evening to see Mrs. B's neice, Mrs. Chas. Hin¬ man, who is sick. There will be a farm fertility meet¬ ing held at the Oak Grove school house by W. E. Hart, of the Clay County Farm bureau. Every one In¬ vited to attend. Everybody welcome, whether they are members of the farm bureau or not. The meeting will be on Tuesday night, Feh. 7th. OBITUARY Luther Benjamin Lewis was born tn Lawrence county, Ind , April 11, 1842, departed this life Jan 10,1922 age 79 years, 9 months, 1 day. He came to Illinois In the year of 1875 and was married to Mlss Ida M. Mc¬ Cullom Nov. 3 1878, to this unfon seven children were born; two, Leota and Harry preceded him to the better world In their youth. He leaves to mourn their loss a wife and five children, namely Oscar, of Chi¬ cago; Laffeyette, of Flora; Mary Connerly, of Lonlsvllle; Frankle Shoot, of Dundas; and Lucille Ryan, of Mitchell, South Dakota, two, grand chllden, one half brother In .West Vlrgfnla; three half sisters, Itwo at Noblesvnie, Ind., and one in Ohio, besides a host of friends and neighbors. Funeral services was conducted by Rev. Corwin of Flora, Jan. 13. after which the body was laid to rest in the Hoosier cemetery to await the resurrection morn. CARD OP THANKS We take this means of thanking all our friends and neighbors who were so kind during our sad bereave¬ ment by the death and at (the funeral ot our loving husband and father. Pa., says: The paper la a good letter from home every week and Is enjoyed very much.I am In ray usual good health, staying with my daughter. The peo¬ ple here are putting wireless tele¬ phones In their homes. They cost $10 to $20, and are attached to their Victrola horns. The wife of Pastor Russell lives here tn Avalon about one square from our place. Most Of the mills here are running about half ttme. The men work week about so as to g'lve all a Ilttle money. There are ar great many Idle men. I do not see much chance for bettering conditions. House rent Is $10 per room per month. Farm products are all tbat are lower. TJie ground has been frozen since the mtddle of December themomeiSer around 20 all the time. Fruit in good shape yet . Lydia and I had tho privilege, with three others, of attending religious meeting at the city Jail—600 prison¬ ers. Saw some noted Criminals, nearly all young men. Six had death death sentences, 35 murderers, 50 women. \ When any one from Flora comes to Pltltsburg, phone Linden 2101 J and see who will answer.
