I have for years been aware that your section of tbe state was largely Interested In apple growing and regret that your horticulturists have not identified themselves with the State Horticultural Society which Is making a special efi'ort to investigate the quettlon. which are troubling you. I do not think the fact of scions be¬ ing taken from nursery or bearing trees has any thing to do with the auo- cesB or failure of yeur orchards. Some of the cautei of our orchard fallurei ara u toHowa; 1. Our tevere lummor drouthi. Tbit may however be practically overcome by Intslllgent, thorough cultivation. Tettt made at the State Unlverilty tbe put teaion with toll from my own grounds showed that where well cul¬ tivated It contained twice at much moisture aa where uncultivated. a. By taking cropB of hay or grain from the orchard and thereby exhauat- Ing tbe fertility of the soil. For sev- erval years I have nothing from my orchard but tbe fruit and ever] two or three years plow under a crop of ry« or clover with excellent results. 3. Insect depredatlona. TheCouling moth, Cuventta and the wbols^rlbe of leaf-eating Insects prey upcn tbe fruit and foliage and destroy entire crept without the owner having a suspicion of the difficulty. All tbe Insects (un¬ less It may be the. Cuventia) may be readily destroyed by one or two appli¬ cation ot London Purple. I send you our latt report hoping It will so Inter¬ est you that you will become a member of the society md receive them regu¬ larly hereafter. WhaUa to binder the organization of a live Horticultural Society In your county?
