NEW YEARS DAY
While reading an encyclopedia this past week,
(everyone should read more), I came across an
item on New Year’s Day.
Did you know it is celebrated in nearly every
country of the world, on the first calendar day
of each year? That in Iran, they have their’s is
on March 21st. The Hindu’s have their holiday,
depending on their religious groups.
The Jewish people celebrate the new year on
September 29 and 30. Some unusual customs
for starting the year included; the English
cleaned their chimneys, from which we get the
expression of “cleaning the slate”. The ancient
Persians gave eggs to their friends. Since the
egg hatches into life, this custom meant the
same as “turning over a new leaf”. Another
one, an English man gave his wife money to
buy pins to last the year. When this custom
disappeared in the 1800’s the saying of “pin
The ancient Romans honored the “God” Janus,
the god of gates and doors and of beginnings
and endings. He had two faces and looked
both forward and backward. The Romans
looked back on what had happened and
thought of what the coming year might bring.
The customs, traditions and way of life have
changed through the years, but the years
come and go. May this one see you hopes and
The Formal Dedication of the new addition will
be held Sunday January 7th at 2 pm. Any parent
who must bring children are asked to please
keep them with them.
The musical selections will be given by the

TROY RIDING CLUB
A meeting was held at the school Wednesday
After the usual business meeting an election of
officers was held. The following persons were
elected to serve.
Vice Pres. .Hattie Brookman
Corresponding Secretary.. Ruth Graham
Next meeting will be January 19th at 7:30 pm. at
the school. A film on The Missouri Cross
Country Trail Ride will be shown.
