"Um-m-m! That Cake Looks Good"
This is a picture story of the Maywood Junior Victory Goodie club. Total membership of the organization- three. Purpose—baking cakes for Yanks. Shown above are Orville Festner, 1638 South 16th avenue; Donald Bray, 1447 South 17th avenue; Jean Henry (official taster), and Robert Henry, 1608 South 16th avenue, originator of the idea. All the boys are eleven years old and baking cakes doesn't stop them from liking baseball or having football heroes. Friday nights the boys meet in one of their homes, alternating each week. They don aprons, get out bowls and ingredients, and before the evening- is over they produce a delicious Yellow Cake, which is brought each Saturday to the Maywood Canteen Booth, 5th avenue and St. Charles road. Already they have sent three and promise to continue, using their prized recipe committed to memory. Many of the neighbors have tasted their cakes and agree they are of high quality. One mother has remarked, "It's a splendid idea and an excellent way to keep them off the streets." The children have been commended by Mrs. R. F. Cooper, Jr., Canteen chairman, who invites all residents of Proviso to donate homemade cakes, cookies and goodies each Saturday for the Service Men.
