Huntiey Post Office Offers IVIailing ideas
The Huntley Post Office will have extended window hours to accomodate the Christmas mailing rush. They will be Saturday, Dec. 18, 8:30am-3pm; Monday-Thursday, Dec. 20-23, 7am-6pm; and Friday, Dec. 24, 7am-5pm.
The United States Postal Service also offers some suggestions for getting those valued Christmas greetings to their destination on time.
The first week of December is not too early to begin mailing domestic cards and parcels for Christmas. A list of international mailing dates is available from the post ; office.
¦   Early mailing of all Christmas cards and packages is encouraged. Last year, the Carol Stream Processing and Distribution Center or the United States Postal Service, which handles the processing and distribution of all mail originating in ZIP Code area 601 and 603, handled over six million pieces of mail per day during the Christmas season.
Additionally, there are alternatives to purchasing stamps at a post office lobby. The McHenry Savings Bank, located in The Huntley Center, is also selling Christmas stamps this year. Stamps can

When wrapping holiday packages for mailing, do not use twine or wrapping paper. They can get caught in machinery and damage the parcel. Instead, use a sturdy ;box sealed with pressure- sensitive Kraft, nylon or glass-reinforced tape. The Postal Service has available for customers' needs various boxes and wrapping materials for a nominal fee.
Proper addressing ensures your cards and parcels will be delivered on time. They encourage customers to print legibly using smudge-proof ink. Always include apartment and suite numbers and correct ZIP Codes. The ZIP Code belongs on the same line as the city and two-letter state abbreviation. They encourage customers to print using all capital letters and no punctuation, and place the last line of the address at
least one inch from the bottom of the mailpiece.
If you use a typewriter or personal computer you can speed mail processing by printing self-adhesive labels. Letters with typed or computer-generated addresses can be read by our high-speed automated equipment and sent on their way at the rate of 35,000 an hour. Hard to read addresses are handled one by one.
If customers are sending Christmas cards that have dark colored envelopes, they encourage the use of white address labels on the envelopes. Dark envelopes with dark printing make it difficult for the automation equipment to read.
For Packaging:   Cushion contents in a sturdy carton with crumpled newspapers, popcorn, air-pocket padding or similar material. Mark out any conflicting addresses or delivery instructions on the box. Place the address on one side only, in the lower right portion of the package. Put your return address in the upper left-hand corner, and don't forget to include your own ZIP Code.
