SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT See Page 7 for Special Pull-Out Section ITk Euntle^ Jamsiiie USPS 580-360 THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 1991 VOLUME 30 - NUMBER 52 OFFICE PHONE 708-669-5621 SERVING THE PEOPLE OF HUNTLEY SINCE 1960 25c per copy Liz McLaughlin Signs For Scholarship Desert Storm Marine Writes Huntley VFW Commander Liz McLaughlin signed her letter of intent for a straight scholarship at Lincoln Junior College. Witnessing the event are her parents, Mr. & Mrs. James McLaughlin, her sister Valerie, her brother Dan and the college representative, Christine Fletcher. The Sr. Vice Commander, Mr. Joseph R. Wojdyla, of the newly formed VFW Post #10780 of Huntley, Illinois received a reply to the letter he wrote to a service man in Saudi Arabia. Letter follows: Dear Pops Wojdyla, I recently received your letter from VFW Post #10780. It is my pleasure to answer you. I am Ray Griggs, the CO. of C Co., Ist Bn, 6th Marines. It would be difficult to overstate how much your support means to us. I am happy to say that we're headed home. By the time you get the letter we could be in the warm embrace of our loved ones. What you can send us are your prayers that all return home safely. We, this batta¬ lion, had few casualties. Not even a scratch. And it's not because they didn't try. Our regiment went through the minefields with three battalions on line. My company made one of the six breaches the 2nd Marine Division passed though. I am proud to say that the Marines and Sailors of "Coldsteel Charlie" were the first to, in, and through the minefields. During the operation we estimate we sent south 800 prisoners, destroyed 25 tanks, 8 APC's, 15 artillery pieces, 4 recoiless rifles, 2 ZSU AAA and countless bunkers and trenches. That doesn't even include what our combat engineers destroyed after our assault elements p:u9sed through. I've learned four things here. 1. God does answer prayers. 2.1 don't like incoming artillery. 3. Our reserves are every bit the fighters the actives are and 4. I'll never trust a weatherman again. Thanks for your support. Semper Fidelis, Ray Griggs Lions, Lioness Donate To School Drug Awareness Program ^ Lions Club President Bob Hight and Lioness President Fran Borhart pose for a picture with Grade School Principal Kelly Baird, School Counselor Lynne Sell and Teacher Rhonda Sundeen (center) to celebrate their clubs' donation to a new drug awareness education program. The clubs donated $675 each toward a new program called Quest. The entire program runs from kindergarten through highschool. However, because of the cost of the program, Huntley Elementary is beginning the program with the junior high students. Before teaching the program, educators must attend a training session presented by Quest. Recently Lynne Sell and Rhonda Sundeen attended one of these training seminars. ' This program will supplement the already existing Snowball and Snowflake programs at Huntley Elementary and High School. Sundeen is currently teaching the program in 7th grade health. The school plans to teach the program to 6th & 8th grade health classes next fall.
