New Miss Huntley Takes The Spotlight

The Miss Huntley Pageant will be broadcast on cable channel access 13 on Wednesday, May 5 at 8:00pm.
Huntley Wins State Horticulture Competition

Kelly Bein, Ami Hecht. Mike Kentgen, Jamie Ketchmark and Joe Pfaff represented Huntley High School at the annual State Horticulture Competition at the University of Illinois last week. They won first place to become one of only two schools to represent the entire state of Illinois at the National Horticulture Competition in Kansas City in the fall. The other Illinois high school winner is Glen Brook South.
The contest is extremely competitive, with many larger and more financially advanced schools with superior equipment competing. The five Huntley contestants were not sure they could win but they were going to put their best effort into it. Mr. Nelson, Huntley's Agriculture teacher said, "I think they surprised
themselves. They deserve to be really proud."
The teacher sponsoring the top scoring individual in the State Competition will choose his team's category. Nursery/ Landscape or Floriculture, and the Huntley team takes the other. In a few weeks they should know which is their category.
This is the fourth State Championship Huntley's Horticulture students have won. "It's rare for the same school to win more than once," Mr. Nelson pointed out. "This speaks very highly for Huntley's program and the students' hard work."
The National, as well as the State, competition consists of three areas: 1) a science literacy test, to test their overall knowledge; 2) performance practicuihs, to show their knowledge in their
category; and 3) a 300-item plant sample/list, in which they must correctly identify each item. According to Mr. Nelson, it takes virtually 100% accuracy to stay in the running.
The Huntley team will be working with Mr. Nelson throughout the summer, studying and taking field trips, to prepare for National competition. A "work auction" and other possible fund¬ raisers are being planned to help pay for the trip to Kansas City.
"The school has helped already, but we will need more to reach our goal," said Mr. Nelson. Donations of money and/or time to help this extraordinary team would be appreciated. Mr. Nelson can be reached at the Huntley High School, 669-.S171, by anyone interested.

All eyes were on Jennifer Lange last Saturday evening as she won the crown at the 1993 Miss Huntley Pageant. Seven contestants took part in the event that ended the first day of the Huntley Business Expo at the Huntley Elementary School.
The candidates in the 1993 Miss Huntley Pageant were introduced by the Master of Ceremonies, Dr. William L. Awe of Huntley Chiropractic, as they were escorted on stage in their evening gowns. Each candidate answered a question that involved their activities, interests, or future plans.
In the second segment of the pageant, candidates appeared in sportswear, which was provided by Wal-Mart, and they performed a short routine to Madonna's "Vogue."    Finally, the women reappeared in their evening gowns, and the former Miss Huntley, Amy Rosenthal, gave her farewell.
Jennifer Lange, the new Miss Huntley, is the daughter of Richard and Linda Lange and a senior at Huntley High School.  She plans on
attending Loyola University in New Orleans and majoring in music performance and advertising with a career as an advertising executive or professional flutist.
The first runner-up in the pageant was Shannon Raby, daughter of William and Karen Raby.  She is currently attending Valparaiso University and majoring in Criminal Justice.  The other candidates included;  Heather Dawn Spencer, Angela Marie Pfaff, Dawn M. Kunde.    ' Stephanie Raby, and Bridget Williams.
Entertainment was provided by the Huntley High School Music Department.  They performed several selections including some from the "Music Man" and "Les Miserables."
The pageant was sponsored by the Huntley Area Chamber of Commerce. Judges included Vernon L. Patton, a member of the State Board of Directors of the Miss Illinois Scholarship Pageant Corporation, Sue Schmitz, the General Manager of WABT Radio in Carpentersville, and Mary Kate Suehia, the former 1989 Miss Hoffman Estates and contestant in the Miss Illinois Pageant.
