Huntley Swimmers Go To State
By Loraine Smith
On Feb. 25 & 26, four Huntley area kids went to Bloomington-Normal for the Illini District Swimming Championships. Their names are Simone Ixger, Melissa Hundley, Alison Smith and Travers Smith. These children swim with the Belvidere Barracudas Swim Team under direction of coach Jon Sheldon. The swimmers begin their season in early September and swim 3-5 times a week for 1 1/2-2 hours a night to practice. They have to make qualifying times to be eligible for the district meet. During the iistrict competition, if you '^make state qualifying times, you go on to the state meet.
Simone Leger and Travers Smith were finalists at the
district meet. Simone placed 5th in her 5-yard back stroke, place 2nd in the medley relay and placed 7th in the free relay in the 11-12-year-old girls, with state qualifying times in ho\h relays.
Travers placed 3rd in the 50- yard back stroke, 4th place in medley relay and 3rd place in free relay in the 9-IO-year-old boys with state qualifying times in both relays and also in the back stroke.
Congratulations and good luck at the state meet on March 18 & 19, where Simone and Travers will compete with the Illinois Area YMCA State Championships from four districts against approxi¬ mately 60 teams. This meet will take place at the University of Illinois Circle Campus in Chicago. Swim fast!
