The expo will feature the Expo Cafe where visitors can fmd lunch items and dessert. The cafe overlooks the exhibition floor. Visitors can also play Expo Bingo and enter a drawing for a $100 cash shopping spree at the Huntley Factory Shops Outlet Mall, sponsored by the Factory Shops and the Huntley Chamber of Commerce. Other prizes are a boy's or girl's bike, sponsored by Northem Illinois Roofing; a free 3-day cruise on Camival Cruiselines to the Bahamas or Baja Mexico, sponsored by Hometown Travel; and a chance to win a 4-piece set of luggage for the trip, sponsored by Huntley Travel. Other raffle prizes and give-a-ways will be given throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday. Mark your calendars and plan to visit continued on page 2 Huntley Fifth Graders Graduate DARE Program By Joyce Liput Huntley Elementary School held the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduation ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 18. It is the second class of fifth graders to complete the program in Huntley. The program is designed to educate childr^ about the dangers of substance abuse and help them find resources to fight the battle against drugs by building self- esteem and making good choices in life. Mrs. Maciejewski opened the ceremony with a welcome to the family and fiiends of the graduates and the fourth graders who will make up next year's DARE class. Maciejewski complimented Hewitt for the "enthusiasm and excitement he brought to the program." Huntley Police Chief Rick Rossi told the kids a modem day parable to illustrate "the values and assets associated with choices made every day of your life that affect ihe rest of your life." He emphasised that "there are no shortcuts in life." Rossi followed his comments by presenting a perfect example of someone who made good choices with the introduction of the guest speaker, former Bulls player, Dave Corzine. Corzine told the students how to look at their lives and make their choices to "feel good about yourself." He used athletics as an example of how you set goals, play by definite mles, and receive cheers for reaching those goals. Having a gym full of people cheering for you is instant gratification for making the right choices but, he said, "in Ufe that's not always the case." Corzine told them, "You still need to set goals in life now, to benefit you later in life. Your choices now, of friends, studying, sports, set who you will be, and you will ultimately benefit. Success is measiued a day at a time." He concluded by saying, "It's what's inside you and how you feel about yourself. DARE will help you leam how to make all those good choices." After the cheers for Corzine died down, Hewitt praised his class on completing 17 weeks "of intense schooling." He announced Todd Weber wrote the winning essay in the state¬ wide "Letter to the Governor" contest The "Take a Stand" award winners, Todd Weber and continued on page 4 Nick DeBartolo and Todd Weber (front, I to r) received "Taking a Stand" awards for their essays at the DARE graduation ceremony. Weber also received the "Letter to the Governor" award. Standing behind them are DARE officer & assistant police chief Mike Hewitt and guest speaker, former Bulls player, Dave Corzine. Routes Being Finalized For Far Northwest Project By Commonwealth Edison, Public Affairs Director Village Board Presents Agenda Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) announced a proposed transmission line route to reach planned sub¬ stations in Algonquin and Huntley, and also announced it has significantly narrowed its focus on routes to serve a planned substation south of the Village of Huntley, in Rutland Township. These facilities comprise ComEd's Far North¬ west Project, which will serve the growing areas of northem Kane and southern McHenry Counties. Sitings for the routes and substations included an eight-month community- based workshop study process. involving about 40 people representing various govem¬ ment, civic, business and educational leaders in the area (the Working Group), as well as several public open houses for residents living in the potential route areas. The route to the planned Algonquin and Huntley substations was generally common among all options studied by the working group. The route begins at ComEd's existing transmission line at Rl 176, northwest of HunUey, and comes south along the existing right-of-way for about four miles. It then goes east for about two and a half miles before going south again in an area east of Huntley, to north of Huntley-Dundee Rd. From that point, the route follows a corridor north of the Kane- McHenry County border, going east to Algonquin. The Rutland Township substation would initially be served by a line extending westerly from Randall Rd. along 1-90. With portions of the route finalized, ComEd will begin making contacts with existing landowners and property developers to discuss any specific suggestions they may continued on page 3 There will be a regular meeting of the board of tmstees of the Village of Huntley on Thursday, Jan. 26,1995 at 7pm at the village annex building at 11221 Dundee Rd., Huntley.
