Hobby brings Christmas cheer to Huntley
By Beth Berndt
Have you ever brought out all ofthe decorations for the Christmas holidays all ready to put them up, knowingyou only have a short amount of time and can't find an extension cord? Not even one? Well, imagine the household if you were Wayne Goers and you were getting ready to put up his decorations! Imagine..."! need 2 wheelbarrows of extension cords, and I can only find one!"
Wayne, Sue, John, Don and Shelley Goers want to say "Happy Holidays" in a very big way.
It all started 15 years (or so) ago when Goers wanted to spread a little cheer. One thing led to another and a family project involving wooden cutouts and many lights evolved.
How, it takes Goers and his family, and many, many friends 3 weekends and 2 wheelbarrows of extension cords to display his creation. Many of the cutouts are made in his garage.
Every year, he tries to out-do the previous year. This year, while he
was out putting things together, a lady from Florida stopped by every other day wanting to know when things were going to be finished. When he was ready to light it, she came back to take pictures for her friends in Florida. She had never seen anything of this magnitude before and was quite impressed.
Goers' ultimate goal is to have the television stations to cover this on their own without having to provide the video tape himself
Now, as if this were not enough, he still has one item of unfinished business. He is looking for a 4' high, plastic, lighted replica of Winnie the Pooh. If anyone knows where he can find one, please call him at 669- 5425.
Ifyou are driving through Huntley tonight, why not take a drive down Woodstock St. It will put even the scroogiest person in a good mood. Why not take your family over there?
Huntley Grade School students celebrate Christmas Around the World
^arb Schmidt
the five first grade classes of Huntley Grade School have been studying how Christmas is celebrated in different countries.
Each one of the classes chose a country to study, and the students made a few items that the people in their country made for Christmas celebration.
The five countries studied in first grade were: Mexico - students made poinsettias and pinatas, Nigeria ~
masks and chocolate-covered bananas were made, Russia ~ students made fabric ornaments, England ~ pomander balls and wassail were made, and Germany ~ gingerbread men and houses plus Christmas trees were made.
The last several weeks have been busy ones for the first graders, but they've leamed a lot about the world and enjoyed every minute of it. More photos on page 7
