Fire Prevention Week Oct. 5-11th "Know When To Go: React Fast To Fire" At one time or another, it's happened to all of us: You're in a public setting ~ maybe shopping at the mall or eating at a restaurant -when suddenly the fire alarm sounds. The first thing you do is look around to see what everyone else does (if anything). According to experts at the nonprofit Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA), this hesitation may be a common response, but it could prove de^y. "Too often, people don't react when a fire alarm sound. Particularly in public settings, people tend to wait to see how others respond," says Meri-K Appy, NFPA's vice president for public education. "We know from tragic fire incidents that a quick, decisive response is often what makes the difference between life and death in a fire." As National Fire P*revention Week begins, this year's theme, "Know When to Go: React Fast to Fire!" will work to change the public's attitudes toward fire alarms in public settings. Al Wiesneth, Fire Marshal at the Huntley Fire Prevention Bureau strongly supports efforts to improve public responsiveness, and stresses the importance of escape planning in any location. "No matter where you are, or what type of building you're in, if a fire breaks'out, it's too late to start developing a plan," says Wiesneth. "You've got to know how to respond immediately in a variety of situation, and take early warning signs of fire seriously." An important component of ihis year's Fire Prevention Week campaign (October 5-11) will focus on home escape, since NFPA estimates that approximately 80% of all U.S. fire deaths occur in the home. In addition, this year's theme will address instances where it may be safer to stay where you are if a fire occurs, such as in some high- rise buildings. Wiesneth urges everyone to develop home escape plans with all members of the household, and to practice fire drills regularly. Wiesneth says an adequate escape plan for one and two-family dwellings includes everyone in the household knowing two ways out of every room establishing an outdoor location in front of the home where everyone will meet upon exiting, and knowing the emergency number of the local fire department, which should be contacted immediately from a nearby phone. Dial 9-1-1 for any emergency. Workout Room Expands Hours!
