Fireworks Danger

Fourth of July is an annual event for Americans that are celebrating the birth of their country. Picnics and fireworks have always been part of that tradition.
Fireworks alone can kill, maim, and bum victims without warning. In Illinois alone, over 1,000 fires were attributed lo fireworks. Thirty- -two firefighters injured and five deaths related to fireworks. Property damage totaled over 7 million dollars.
The Slate Fire Marshal's office reported 300 injuries in Illinois and many of these injuries were children under 15 years of age. Injuries to the hands and fingers were the most common, accounting for 36 per cent. Injuries lo the eyes and ears can result in blindness and permanent loss of hearing.
In Illinois, all fireworks are illegal except sparklers, smoke devices, snakes and glow worm pellets, tfick noisemakers, and most forms of toy pistols or paper caps.
However, legality does not necessarily indicate safety. Misuse, or the use of these devices by children without adult supervision, can create a dangerous situation. A pretty sparkler, for example, reaches temperatures of 3000 degrees fahrenheil and remain hot enough to cause serious bums even after they are extinguished. Every year parents give them to their children to play with. Bums can be very painful and require a long lime to heal.
In May each year the Huntley > jirefighlers conduct a "Fill the "^ool" campaign for youthful victims of fire and bums. Fireworks are the cause of some painful and disfiguring injuries of these kids in "Bum Camo".
The safe alternative to using fireworks at home is to attend a public display where a licensed professional rans the show.

Fireworks Displays
Traditional fireworks for the 4th of July celebration will be held in the following communities:
 Elgin - To be held at the Sports Complex at 601 South McLean Blvd on the 4th at dusk, free.
 Woodstock - Weather permitting will have its fireworks display at dusk in Emricson Park. However, due to the wet conditions, no parking will be allowed inside the park for the fireworks display. Be sure to plan ahead and m^e other arrangements for parking. The committee will be asking for donations at the gate to help pay for the fireworks display.
 Sleepy Hollow - Sabalino Park on4lhof July at dusk.
 Crystal Lake - Bring your chairs, blankets, etc. to the Main Beach on July 6lh al dusk. There will be a fee.
 East Dundee - 125th Anniversary celebration on July 20 at Jockey Park.
Railway Museum Displays Trolleys
The Illinois Railway Museum in Union will host a Trolley Pageant on July 4. Discover one of the largest displays of antique trolleys in the Midwest only a few miles from Huntley. Call 815/923-4000 for more information.

Farmside Office Closes For 4th Holiday
The Huntley Farmside office will be closed over the 4ih of July holiday weekend. The office will be closed from Wednesday, July 3, through Sunday, July 7, and will reopen for business at 8:30am Monday, July 8.
