Norwegian 4-Hers Visit Huntley Harvestors Emily Ruth, Scott Ruth, Martha Holsen, Helene Stratveit, Tiin Hoeft and Eric Ruth seem to be having a wonderful time with their 4-H guests from Norway. By Tim Hoeft The Huntley Harvestors 4-H Club welcomed Helene Stratveit and Martha Holsen, both from Norway to their meeting on July 11,1996. Helene, 18-years-old and Martha, 17-years-old are bolh president of their respective 4-H Clubs in Norway. They are here participating in a Norway/USA 4-H exchange that has been going on for over 20 years. During odd years, the American 4-Hers visit Norway and on even years, the Norwegians visit us. Helene is being hosted by the Hoeft family and Martha by the Ruth family, both of Huntley. The girls arrived on Wednesday, July 3rd and will be staying in Huntley until Sunday, July 28th. The purpose of the exchange is to experience 4-H in the U.S. and American culture and family life. At the 4-H meeting last Thursday, Helene and Martha told us about their mountainous country with its many fjords, as well as showing us pictures so we understand why they consider us living in "flatlands". They also shared information about their school and government systems, as well as their 4-H programs. They do ONE 4-H project each year that is only shared with their club members., they do not have county or state fairs. The 4-Hs do stand for the same thing in Norway and when translated their pledge is very similiar lo ours. We gave each of them one of our Huntley Harvestor hats. While Helene and Martha are here, we are trying to show them the highlights of our community and state. We have already visited the Huntley Dairy Marl (on their 1st night here), the Hancock Observatory, Watertower Place, Nike Town, Planet Hollywood, Racing Rapids, Woodfield, Rainforest Cafe, and Great America! We hope to get back to Navy Pier, some of the museums. Seven Acres Wild West Town, the Illinois Railway Museum, Lake County Fair and Springfield. They bolh speak wonderful English, so if you happen to see them around town or at the Dairy Mart, be sure to welcome the girls to Huntley!
