Huntley Girls Get Cross Country Gold
By Pam Garven
Amanda Verhaeghe and Leah Coleman, both from Huntley, recently competed with the Elgin Sharks Track Club at the American Athletic Union cross country nationals in Cleveland, Ohio on December 7 and the United States Association of Track and Field national cross country meet on Dec. 14 in Lexington, KY.
Amanda, a 6th grader at Immanuel Lutheran, was the 1995 1st place national winner of the girls' 3,000 meter race. Leah is a third grader at Morning Star Christian Academy and ran as part of the 1996 1st place regional Bantam girls team (ages 8-10). This was Leah's first time to compete on a national level.
Both girls were awarded 1st placed team gold medals by a representative of the Junior Olympics Committee. There were over 3,000 participants from around the country in this annual
National Championship competition.
We congratulate Amanda and Leah for their hard work and wish them success in the 1997 season. The Elgin Sharks Track Club is coached by Bob Pleticha and Mark DuBose.
