Huntley Celebrates Memorial Day
By Joyce Liput
Did you hear the comments? "The parade gets better every years!" or "Does it seem like the parade is bigger this year?" or "This is always such a nice ceremony!"
It certainly seems to be true! While other communities cancel parades due to lack of interest, Huntley's parade does seem to get bigger and better every year. And the ceremony at the cemetery is a moving tribute to all veterans.
The parade began about I0:40am from the Huntley American Legion Hall to an enthusiastic crowd. With flags waving and band playing, the parade circled the Town Square before heading for the Hundey Cemetery.
At the cemetery Master of Ceremonies Herb Glissendorf, adjutant of Huntley American Legion Post #673, welcomed the crowd. Pastor Charles Kittel of Trinity Lutheran Church said the opening prayer. Matthew Drufke read "Flanders Field" and May
Chesak read "America's Answer". Huntley Scouts performed the placing the memorial wreath. The memorial address was presented by Commander Peter Alexander of American Legion-Fox Valley Post in Aurora. Huntley High School Band performed "The Star Spangled Banner" under the direction of band teacher Todd Millen. The ceremony closed with Huntley American Legion rifle volley and "Taps" by Eric Carlton & Eric Stensing. During the closing a double fly-by took place, adding a very touching moment to a moving ceremony. Sandwiches and refreshments were provided at the American Legion Hall following the ceremony.
The Memorial Day program was a result of community effort. A special thank you to all the organizers for their hard work in putting on the event. Thank you also to all the participants in the parade, marchers and watchers, for making it a great success!
