Huntley Citizens Oppose ComEd
By Donald M. (Mac) Gregory
Commonwealth Edison is planning to run 138KV power lines from 1-90 up Hwy 47 to Huntley and points north. The public hearings are complete and their fate now rests in the hands of the state government and the Illinois Commerce Commission in Springfield. Several meetings at the local level have indicated an overwhelming opposition to the plan of running these lines overhead (aesthetics, property values, health concems). The citizens believe this power line should and could be buried which would eliminate our major objection. Com-Ed states that the extra cost (their figures are suspect) would have to be bom by those citizens affected. Additionally, the lines are proposed to tie in at 1-90, proceed north through a commercial property then through many existing residences while paralleling undeveloped land and finally through Huntley and toward the north.
The residents seem to be underdogs or pawns caught between commercially zoned areas and Com-Ed. Without intervention by state legislators, Huntleyites will be hung out to dry as Com-Ed bulls their way to fulfilling their master-plan of power distribution regardless of who is in the way. Underground cables would solve the problem. Honda and many other states bury cable as a matter of state statute and do it rather cheaply compared to the figures Com-Ed provides. In fact, in the state of Kansas, government funds were approved for use in defraying the costs of burying cable in a similar dispute.
All residents of Huntley, not just those in the proposed power-line path, can get involved now by writing and calling state legislators. An example of this letter would be:
As a resident of the Huntley area, I am strongly opposed to the proposal to run overhead power lines on 651 poles through Huntley, II. The logical solution would be to bury this power line and eliminate the health risks with radiation and lo maintain the beauty of our quaint village. We need your help to counter the power of ComEd when this issue reaches Springfield.
Thank You, llSignedll
