Huntley Youth Football wraps up a successful season by Dan Hickey Special correspondent Final game report Huntley vs. Crystal Lake South - Oct. 1 Overview: The Huntley Redskins light, middle, and heavyweight teams have just completed reg¬ ular season play on their most successful sea¬ son ever. Their combined record of 16-5 is the best in the entire youth football league. Despite excellent play and a great record, Huntley did not see any playoff games. Regardless, it was indeed an impressive season. Lightweights: Huntley 0 Crystal Lake South 6 What a strange way to end the regular sea¬ son for the lightweights, a team that rolled over every team in its path until its final game. The game can be described in one word: defense. The defense on both sides was so strong that neither team could score a point during regulation play. At the end of four quarters with a 0-0 tie the game went into overtime. After one overtime with still no score the game went into double-overtime. Celebration broke out as Danny Bolwrin scrambled into the end-zone for a touchdown, but the officials called it back on an illegal formation (too many men in the backfield). With the wind knocked out of its sails the Redskins could not come back and score again. The elated Crystal Lake team got a breath of new life and were able to convert their next possession into a touchdown. Huntley stopped the extra point but did not have a chance to score again. It was their first scoreless game and first loss of the sea¬ son. However, the Redskin Ughtweights closed out the season with a fantastic 6-1 record. The coaches were disappointed about the out¬ come of the game but could not have been any more proud of their players. Middleweights: Huntley 20 Crystal Lake South 15 The middleweights wrapped up their reg¬ ular season with a five game winning streak and extended their record to an impressive 5- 2. It was a hard-fought, lead-changing con¬ test. Himtley started the party with a 10-yard quarterback sneak by Vito Busano, who also got the extra point. The Raiders then came back and scored, along with a two-point con¬ version to take the lead. Later Quinn Kalamatas threw a pass to Mike Sible, who broke a tackle and rocketed 60 yards for a touchdown to regain the lead for Huntley. Chris Schuld added the extra point with a "picket fence" run (14-7 Huntley). Crystal Lake came back strong and put another eight points on the board to regain their last lead of the game (15-14). Huntley then added six more points when Vito Busano scored on an eight-yard reverse (no extra point), making the final score Huntley 20, Crystal Lake 15. The coaches were extremely pleased with the team's performance. Coach Terry Knott told his players that whether or not hey make the playoffs they should hold their heads high. He mentioned that this year's strong results were only key roles on the team - Mark Kropke and Jimmy Vanda were among the names he mentioned. Whether or not the middleweights make the playoffs wUl depend on a coin toss between them and other teams with an equal record. Heavyweights: Huntley 36 Crystal Lake South 0 The hea'vyweights ended their season with a bang, obliterating Crystal Lake South 36-0. The start of the game could be termed "Fumblefest 2000" as both teains turned over their first three possessions with a fumble. Luckily for Huntley, Chris Mmphy jumped on the Raiders third fumble in the end-zone to put the first six points on the board. Chad Proffitt added the two-point kick. In the sec¬ ond quarter Emanuel Mimoz put a serious hit on a Raider running back which caused a fumble, recovered by Chad Proffitt. Munoz then helped himself to six more points with a three-yard run off tackle. Next, Ryan Edwards caught a TD pass from half¬ back Levi Pippenger for another six points. Edwards then sacked the Raiders QB and Joel Chambers recovered the fumble to give Huntley the ball again. The drive ended with another 21-yard TD pass from Kurt Dehning to Ryan Edwards. The extra point run was made by Munoz. In the next half Levi Pippenger ran back the opening kick-off Crystal Lake kick-off 65 yards for the final Huntley TD of the game. Chad Proffitt added the extra two points. After that the second string took over and held the Raiders scoreless. Final score, Huntley 36 - CL South 0. The coaches had only praise for their players and eagerly await the outcome of other games played to see if they will be in the playoffs. The Heavyweights finished the season 5-2, a big improvement over last year's 3-4 finish. Salute the season: Complete roster of Huntley Youth FootbaJI players and coaches inside on page 4.
