Park Board seeks $9.35 million Proposed referendum asks residents to help fund recreation center by Christopher Petersen The Huntley Farmside The Huntley Park Board has agreed to take their desire to turn the South Elementary School building into a recre¬ ation center to the voters. The Park Board voted to ask Huntley residents for a $9.35 million referendum at its meeting last Tuesday night. The referendum would go towards the purchase and renovation of the 12-class- room building into a commu¬ nity center and the con¬ struction of an aquatic cen¬ ter on the same site. The decision to put a ref¬ erendum on the March bal¬ lot came just under the wire, as the board needed to make a decision by Jan. 18 for the referendum to be placed on the ballot this spring. The referendum, if passed, would mean an increase in the tax rate for homeowners in Huntley of about 9 cents per $100 of assessed value. This means that the owner of a $150,000 home in the village would pay an estimated $45 more in prop¬ erty taxes. However, park officials have said that the continued growth in the area would cut into that increase over time. If the referendum is passed, $4 million will be, spent on the construction of an aquatic center on 8 acres of land southwest of the school building. The land would also host athletic fields, a nature trail and concession stands. The board also discussed what was to be done with the school building itself. See Referendum Paee 2 Webb to village: How much more must you spend? by Christopher Petersen The Huntley Farmside With enrollment in the vil¬ lage's school district rising more and more and another referendum to build new schools looming, residents of Sun City are becoming con¬ cerned that they will not be able to keep up with the dis¬ trict's need for income.
