New year snowstorm flies into town

The season's first snowstorm blanketed Huntley streets and sidewalks, and gave many chil¬ dren a belated gift.
Upwards of 9 inches of snow fell at the National Weather Service's Rockford recording station, enough snow to make a snowman or to take out the snowmobile.
While the storm made the record books in the Chicago area, most McHenry County residents dug out from a major, but hardly record-setting winter storm. According to the Weather Service, 21.6 inches of snow fell at Chicago's O'Hare
International Airport, which is second only to a 23-inch storm thatfellonJan. 26-27, 1967.
The Rockford area saw a trace of snow Friday, about 3 inches Saturday and 6 inches Sunday. On Jan. 6-7, 1918, a record 16.3 inches fell in the Rockford area, the forecaster said.
Compared to the major snow storm of 1979 that paralyzed many communities for days, roadways were quickly cleaned up and traffic was moving smoothly soon after this week¬ end's winter blast.
For some the blizzard caused few problems, but for others who had to work, it was no pic¬ nic. On Monday, letter carrier Sue Frihart said she Was taking everything in stride.
"I'm having trouble today because of the snow piled up in front of the mailboxes," Frihart said. "And I don't like getting stuck in the snow."
The substitute carrier who takes over Frihart's rout^ on Saturday did have a tough time, she said.

"He said he got out (of his vehicle) for about 95 percent of the boxes. Only one delivery he couldn't make."
Heather Darnell of Grove Street said her family enjoyed digging out from beneath the snow, even though she was unable to finish her newspaper delivery route.

With the construction of two new elementary schools, the offering of new high school courses and the hiring of another 20 teachers for a projected 40 percent boost in enroll¬ ment. School District 158 officials are not worried about having too much free time.
Superintendent J.R. Hartley said the district is trying to stay one step ahead of the growth tak¬ ing place.
"You have to think out¬ side the box, or you're in trouble," Hartley said. "I just use my favorite expression 'desperate peo¬ ple do desperate things'."
Hartley said there are no signs of a let up in the projected expansion every¬ one is forecasting for the Huntley area.
"There was a lot done with the referendum and property acquisitions, and hiring a lot of people. We hope we can do as well next year as we did this past year," he said.
In perhaps what was the district's major accom¬ plishment, there was com- niunitywide support in November for a pair of referendums. The passage of the referendums allows
