Hundreds of concemed peo¬ ple packed the hall in fix>nt of the McHenry County Board room. Many wore shirts or carried posters saying "No County Airport." Many of these folks were from Coral Township. One of the proposed locations for the airport is in Coral Township and this site is one of the most distasteful to many of the objectors.
The members of the TAMCA (Taxpayers against McHenry County airport) wore buttons and T-shirts bearing this slogan. ITiey were not admitted to the McHenry County Board room unless there were seats to accommodate them.
They waited in the hall while the County Board conducted its regular scheduled business.
When those who had attend¬ ed the zoning hearings left, tiie door was open and some of those who had registered as speakers entered the Board room. The group was given 30 minutes. There were 10 speak¬ ers, which gave each 3 minutes to speak. Qiairman Buss timed them.
Robert Brunt, Superintendent. of the Huntley sdsool systeiBj was one of tbe speakers. He. said that itbe aijcfwrt takes tax( dollars fsam I6e ¦•chooi. Farm-, land, he said bdags in $25 ani acre taxes. 8000 acres wouldt 8000 acres would take $20,000.
An airport owned by the County would not bring in tax dollars. This would place a burden on the taxpayers, which already have fire (Ustrict, school district and road taxes to pay.
Jerry Paulson of the Defen¬ ders spoke of the change the airport would mar the character ofthe County which is now more rural.
Jane MuUer, a member ofthe TAMCA said that only .001% of the residents of the county would own or operate planes or use the proposed airport.
Ralph Birk spoke of the noise polution.
Tiaie Barry of Seneca Town¬ ship asked "Who wants an airport"?
Member Cal Skinner, Sr. told of the Aug. 14 public hearing.
He said that one of those against the airport had said that he. Skinner, should wear a suit of armor to the Board meeting as he was going to shoot him.
"^'Aim carefully," Skinner said "I'm right here. I wouldn't want you to hit anyone else." Skinner also recounted that one of the members had said that none of the Board would be elected Nov. 5 as the group intends to go out against them.
It was pointed out that even if this threat could be carried out, only a portion of the Board will be up for election at that time as there are three groups of members to be elected at different years.
Board Member Cal Skinner, Sr. also surprised everyone by imoving that the $100,000 Mc¬ Henry County Airport study be discontinued.
Member Robert Stoxen said "pay him and get him on his way."
Member Thor Erickson would like to have the study (vi^ich the County is paying $105,000 for) completed.
Member Fitzgerald said the study committee have never presented a plan to the Board.
Chairman of the Board left his chair to be seated. Member Irv Walters took his place as chairman. Buss said that the study should be finished and that the consultant should never get another job.
The place which the <»mmit- tee found is located west of Woodstock, not near a public road. The study has so many holes it doesn't make sense and it is 70% done, he concluded.
Member BUl Russell sold, "There are 4 locations to see what it will cost and not disruot too many people."
Skinner's motion to abandon the study failed, which meant that the study should go on.
