Scenes from Appreciation Breakfast
As in the past, Huntleyites are concemed and involved with the youth ofour community and with our community itself. It was never a suprise to see May Chesak pulling weeds and planting flowers in front of the American Legion. Neither was it surprising to see Dennis Rudsinski planting flowers on The Square.
For many years we've been blessed with a number of dedicated people who have planted seeds of Sportsman¬ ship. Friendship. Leadership. Wisdom and Pride in the Youth of Huntley. Not because it was their jobs, (they never got paid) not because they needed something to do, (most are very busy people) and not because they wanted glory, (sometimes "Thanks" never entered the conversation(! It was just because they enjoyed doing it.
This year, an entire summer has been devoted to the "Beautification Program" at the Huntley Athletic Field. Not an hour or so here and there, or an occasional weekend. I mean an entire summer, (before work, after work, each and every weekend, don't even think about a vacation) and when it's too dark to work or it's raining, there is the planning and the fund raising. Beg. borrow and trade for materials and hope to God there's enough free labor to get the job done. Well, it's done and a "Beautiful" job it is. This time, gosh damtt, all
those people that donated rnohey. materials, know how, equipment, labor and their time are going to get some Glory and Thanks whether they want it or not. because they certainly deserve it.
About a year ago. a couple of men got together and decided that our high school baseball diamond should have "Dug¬ outs" so with a few connections and a lot of ideas we got "Dugouts"! The original idea was brought up at a Boosters Meeting and Danny Ziller and CTiuck Ruth arranged for the materials. The labor was supplied by Lindsey, Ellsworth, Erath. Steve Reynolds. Chuck Ruth. Dan Ziller. Larry Rasmusen. Paul Resh, Dale Erath, Paul Newton and Shane Jordi. Fertilizer donated by FS and Marlowe's was spread and the Diamond was all freshly' stripped of sod where needed, by Erath, Ellsworth and Cliff Beherendt.
Well, the dugouts tumed out great and whether or not this started the whole chain of events leading to refurbishing the football field, was never clearly stated, but all of a sudden there was an all out program going to get a heck of a lot of work' done in one short summer. Gene Lindsey with his favorite sidekick (Norma), approached almost every organ¬ ization in town for funds to get things rolling. The School District, the Park District,
Lions, Liohess', Jaycees. ani the Jaycee Women along with the Boosters Club donated! money for materials. Many' materials, of course were donated by businesses in thej area. Patterson Lumber. Ruth DFC. Marlowe's and FS just toi name a few.
They took out posts, moved posts, took dpwn fence, removed dirt, hauled more dirt and generally got dirty. Took down the old announcers booth and built a new one, took down incandescent lights and put up new metal halide ones. Rewiring had to be done, a new retaining wall was installed, bleachers nwved, goal posts moved and seed and fertilizer spread.
The Huntley Fire Department brought equipment to help. Bill Ruth brought equipment and the Public Works Department hauled black dirt in.
A Community Project? You bet your life it was, but it couldn't have been done without Gene and Norma Lindsey. If each and every project was listed individually, the Lind¬ sey's would be listed under each for they have been involved in it all supplying refreshments, fun, love and humor along with every seed and every nail.
We're sure they, along with the rest of the community would like to thank Phil and Walter Freund. Vemon Downen. Don Tessmer, Wendell Gilliam.
