CELEBRATION AT TRINITY SEPTe 12
Sunday, September 12 ia a day of celebration for T^ inity Lutheran Oiurch of Hu tley. 2.-^ years ago the groundbreaking servioe f >r the present church building was held. Reverend Martin Baumgaertner of C arlotte, North Carolina, a son of Trinity, will be the guest preacher for both services (8:iO a.m. and 10:30 a. .).
Reverend Baumgaertner was bom in Hu tley August 17, 1912. His grandfather, J hn, served the first Lu heran congregation from 1870 thru 1877. Martin' father. Reverend L uis, was one of the first missionaries W st of the F z River. He served the people between here a d B Ividere by horse and buggy. He went on to serve Huntley' congregation ftom 1910 thru 1947.
' artin graduated from C ncordia College in M Iwaukee in 1932. He completed C ncordia Seminary in 1936. During this time he served the Northem Illinois D strict while vicaring at S . J 'tin's in Elgin, Illinois. Reverend Baumgaertner served his first partis in Austin, Indiana from 1937 thru 1941. He entered the miliary services in 1941 and retired as Lt. Col. USAF in 1%.^. His military career reflects quite a series of achievements. He served 12 years overseas, of which 4 years were in combat zones in Europe. Reverend Baufngaertner served as Pai airoop Chaplain in Japan and K rea. He was decora'ed with the Purple Heart, B onze S ai and 8 Special Ribbons. In 1968 he was further decorated by his gra eful church with the Martin of Tours Mcda f r dis inguished service in the military chaplaincy.
Upon retiring from the military service Martin ser/ed on the staff of Valparaiso U iversity, Valparaiso, Indiana. Reverend Baumgartner is presently retired in Charlotte, North Carolina from Ascension Lutheran Church where he served from 1970 thru 1976. While serving at Ascension, Martin was chairman of C arlotte Lutheran C ergy Assoc., chairman of Mecklenburge Luthera Campus A soc. and a member of the C arlotte C isis Ministry Task F ree C arlotte area Clergy Assoc. Rev. Baumgartner is at present serving P ince of .Peace Lutheran Churcb in C arlotte and Mission Projects.
In 1943 Martin married Anna Nolde from Richmond, Virginia. Martin and Anna raised two children. D . Marcia Petty Ph. D of Dayton, Ohio and Martin J . U.S. Govemment attomey of C icago, Illinois.
T ere will be a pot luck luncheon to honor Reverend Baumgartner at Trinity Lu heran Church following the 10: <0 service. If you have any questions please contact the Parish Fellowship C mmittee.
