Defenders Move To Expediate Landfill Hearing
The McHenry County Defenders today (Nov. SOth) filed a motion asking the County Board's landfill hearing committee to rule that the landfill proposed by Waste Management, Inc. is not needed because the County plans to site its own land¬ fill.
In a motion, filed during the first day of hearings on Waste Management's applica¬ tion for siting approval for a landfill on McCue Road and Illinois Rt. 176, Howard Learner, an attorney with Business and Professional People in the PubUc interest (BPI) which represents the Defenders' in this hearing, urged the Board to dismiss Waste Management's landfill application and protect the public's investment of time and money in selecting a site for a County landfill for disposal of the county's waste.

Quilting Bee At Historical Society Museum
On Thursday, December lOth between 9:30 and 3:30 the McHenry County Historical Society Museum in Union will host a Christmas quilting bee. Both experienced and would-be quilters are invited to attend. Three quilts will be set up for quilting. It is the making and sale of these quilts each year that help fund the operation of the Society's museum.
Members of the Society's Ways & Means Committee will provide a soup and salad luncheon but quilters are asked to bring a plate of Christmas cookies to share.
For those who would like to work on other craft type activities for the Society that day, there will be rags to tear for the loom and. demonstrations on making Moravian star Christmas ornaments.
Those planning to attend should call the museum at 815-923-2267 so lunch arrangements can be made.
Train Accident Prevention
For many years the railroad crossing on Mill ST. has been a concern of people in Huntley. Especially, those that travel across this intersection daily or even more often.
The picture to the right shows what has happened too often in Huntley. It is a vehicle which has broadsided a train at Mill due to icey conditions. The photo below is of the new crossing signals at the Mill ST. crossing. The signals have been needed for some time and now even more with the growth Huntley is experiencing.
Although we now have crossing signals at this intersection it does not maake a complete substitution for stopping looking and listening for a possible train coming. Always remember a car can stop a train can't.
Keep The Wreath Red Again
- For the fifth straight year the Huntley Fire Protection District will be involved in a state wide campaign to alert residents concerning fires caused by holiday decorations. The project is called "KEEP THE WREATH RED".
As in previous years a large wreath has been put up in the window in front of Station #1 on Coral St. The red lights on the wreath will be constantly lit. If there is a fire in the district caused directly by holiday decorations a bulb on the wreath will be changed to white.
During the last four years the lights on the wreath have remained red throughout the holiday season. The fire dis¬ trict asks that all residents Continued on page 7
Library Funds Run Out
The remaining Revenue Sharing funds which have been supporting the operation of the Community Library have run out. Revenue Sharing funds are apparently a thing of the past and alternate funding has not yet been found. The Community Library has continued to be open on Tuesdays from 3:00 to 6:00 and on Thursdays from 6:00 to 9:00 during November without financial support.
However without additional sources of funds at this time the Community Library will not be open during the month of December. The Situation will be reevaluated at the first of the year.
There are several people who will miss the Community Library hours on Tuesday and Thursday. But others question as to why the use of the Community Library hours are not very high or as high as would be expected. Continued on page 13
