National Fire Prevention Week Last year 4,660 people died in the over 551,500 residential fires in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). In addition, 20,440 were injured, and residential property damage hit an estimated $3.7 billion. "The numbers speak for themselves — people are being needlessly injured or killed in fires," says John Scott, a safety professional with the Country Companies. Scott spends a great deal of time each year giving fire safety programs to schools, and working with other groups providing fire safety information as part of his job with the insurance and investment group. "October 9-16 is National Fire Prevention Week. Now is a good time for people to review their home fire safety efforts, says Scott. Smoke detectors are probably the most inexpensive and effective way to warn your family of fire. In general, you should test your battery-operated detectors once a week, and AC-powered units once a month. Make a home fire escape plan and practice it regularly with your family. Make sure everyone knows at least two ways out, and plan a safe meeting spot outside where you can account for everyone.
