Thanksgiving
When Americans sit down Thursday, Nov. 24, to eat turkey and give thanks for their blessings, they will be repeating a ceremony first performed 367 years ago.
It wEis in the autumn of 1621 when Massachusetts Bay Governor William Bradford invited neighboring Indians to join the Pilgrims for a three-day festival of recreation and feasting, in gratitude for the bounty of
the season.
By the end of the 19th century. Thanksgiving Day had become an institution throughout New England and was officially proclaimed a national holiday by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The traditional feast of turkey and pumpkin pie, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, has become an indigenous part of American culture.
Snowflake Activity Was In The Forecast
The Huntley Jr. High School held its first Operation Snowflake activity of the school year on Saturday aftemoon, November 19th, 1988.
"Operation Snowflake is for all Huntley Jr. High students. The goal of OS is to help kids learn about topics of importance to them while having a really good ^me. No put-downs are allowed: their activities are designed to help the participants feel better about themselves and to build leadership skills."
Several high school students and Sth graders, along with Mrs. Lynn Sell, school counselor and coordinator for OS in Huntley Jr. High, worked very hard to plan and direct this "action-packed, fun filled afternoon." Mr. David Bruce, school gym teacher, also helped supervise this activity. The guest speaker, Mr. Mike Baber, family counselor, led a discussion and activities throughout the aftemoon covering topics
Math Contest
like "Getting Along With Parents" and "Peer Pressure."
During the last half hour of the day, the parents were allowed to attend also to find out what Operation Snow- flake is all about.
More activities, similiar to the one on November 19th, are planned for the year. Information and details of the next Operation Snowflake
will be available to all Jr. High students shortly prior to the next upcoming event.
A large number of students showed up for Operation Snow- flake that day, and a great time was had by all. We're sure as word travels, the attendance number will double for the next Operation Snow- flake event. Hope you will join us then!
On Wednesday, November 16th, 15 members of the Huntley High School Math Team participated in the Math Invitational. This contest is new to the High School and consists of individual and team tests as well as a pressure round where students have only two minutes to answer a question.
The team of Jackie Swanson, Mary Halat and Jim Cook turned out for a high score of 1000 pointsi The Sara Matz, Mike Lekics, Brian Wesemann team was a close second with 910 points. Also competing were: Michelle Fishleigh, Mandy Raymond, Jessica Lombard, Angie Henkel, Melissa Firme, Joe Bernat, Tracy Evans, Lynda Hasse, and Amy Bein.
Thanks to all who partici¬ pated in this tough contest I
Gifted Glider
Former Huntley resident and graduate of Huntley High School, John Heiney has for years called himself a glider bum. However, those in the know now cidl him a professional glider pilot.
His craft has a 35 foot wing span. After looping his glider 62 times he deserved the honor of being listed in the Guinness Sports Record '-- Book.
To achieve his record, John who is 6 feet tall set the record in San Clemente Caiifomia. After being towed to record hights of 9000 feet and released, he dove at 70 to 80 miles per hour to gain speed for the 62 record setting loops in five minutes.
He put on a show near the Huntley Center about a month ago especially for his mother, Hasel Heiney, and his many friends in Huntley. Admiral Finn, a local balloonist towed John high into the sky over Huntley, where his performance consisted of seven dramatic loops and ended with John landing on his feet.
Ten years ago John took his first gliding lesson and fell in love with ^he sport. Upon returning to Illinois he discovered that more lessons should be required before one makes a solo flight. In
