MEET THE CANDIDATES NITE
SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES
Two of the most frequent asked questions of candidates running for public office are why are you running and, what contribution can you make if elected? As a candidate for the position of School Board Member District #158 I would like to share with you my answers to these two difficult questions.
Someone has said that the reason people run for School Board is that they must be gluttons for punishment. Maybe so. However, I personally have found School Board member¬ ship challenging, demanding, exciting, and above all reward¬ ing. The challenge has been to objectively determine what the needs of all seven hundred plus students of this district are. the demanding challenge is to determine how best to satisfy
To the Voters of School District 158.
My name is Jim Reid and I am running for school board in District 158. My wife, Trish, and I moved to Huntley eight years agao with our four children: Chris, David, Michelle and Tyra. I am seeking a position on the school board because I believe our present board, administration and teachers are doing an excellent job in providing a quality education for the youth of our community. A vote for me could accurately be described as a vote of confidence in the manner our schools are currently being run.
I graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1963 with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology. I then worked with
JUDY McLAUGHLI
I'm runnmg for school board member becaus I care about the quality of education for our children. I do have three children in this system. I've spent time with the children and teachers in various volunteer programs over the years. I've taken an active interest in the school board. One of my concerns is about the rapid escalation of our tax rate at a pace much higher than inflation.
I have a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry and a B.A. in Art. I worked my way through college as a draftsman, clerk, cashier and waterfront director at a Girl Scout camp. I worked nine years in research chemistry and my last position was as Head Chemist at Keebler Co. I also have taught fourth grade and still substitute.
We know what is happening in Chicago because the school board spent too freely. Do you really think Gov. Thompson is going to bail out our board - us in #158?

Much of my background and training were discussed in last week's Haatiey Faraalde. In the hope of not being redun¬ dant, I will summarize briefly.
I feel that with my back¬ ground, training and experience in teaching for 6 years, managing an III. Bell Tele. Co. Branch office and running my own real estate business. I have a well-rounded background for the position of school board member. Besides my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in business education including classes in law, accounting, economics, banking, real estate and appraisal, I am constantly taking classes either to broaden my education or for my personal enjoyment.
With my experience in teaching high school and substituting in every grade level, I know first hand the problems faced hy our school both in and out ofthe classroom.

The reason I am running the school board, is becausel Care. I care about all the children of our community. When the administration and school board tells parents that they have to think of the student body »i a whole and do what is right and best for the whole student body, by cutting a half-time L.D. resource teacher (that the L.D. children really need.) who only helps a minority of the students and hires a guidance- consular-social worker that would help all the students. They then offer an advanced chemistry class for the minority of 9 or 10 high school students. This doesn't make sense to met One minority is getting the cheated while the other minority is getting anything they want.
I feel that if the school administration is doing some- Contmued on Page S

The School Board Election will be held this Saturday, April 12th from 12 noon to 7 pm at the Huntley Village Hall.
Last Monday, April 7th about 30 people attended the C.A.C. "Meet the Candidate" night moderated by Dr. Gary Grau. Candidates Betty Conley, Bernadine Darling, Judy McLaughlin, Wally Pupich and Jim Reid. opened with a S minute resume.
Betty Conley said that she felt that there was a need for a local person to be on the Board who knows how citizens of all ages feel about issues. She said that she is a conservative and knows how to live on a tight budget. Betty felt that education was important to people. She asked why more Huntley children aren't going to college. She said that we have quality teachers and would be willing to negotiate with the teachers and listen to them. Betty said that she felt that the Board had let the citizens and herself down on certain issues.
Bernadine Darling began with a resume of her business experience as a teacher and Illinois Bell worker. She said she had something to offer and would be an asset and could help stuUvnts attain a better education. Bernadine felt tharbeing associated with the North Central Association would be an asset. She would strive fbr better communication between the board, parents and the community. She said that there whould be mere meaningful minutes in the paper and open discussions at the school board meetings. She said that she had not attended school board meetings for several years but that when she had she became discouraged
Judy McLaughlin stated that she knows how to budget on a one income family. She gave a summary of her work as a Chemist. Judy said that she was upset with the Board's lack of hearing and listening. She said she enjoyed working with kids and that they need a good solid foundation. She said that students and parents need the ear of the board.
Wally Pupich gave a resume of his work as a Pharmacist & university teaching associate. He said as hc''sees it there are two important questions - 1. Why do you want to run? apd 2. What qualifies & waht good can you do. As to the 1st question. He said that 3 years "go he sat in the gym as a candidate because he felt he could make a positive contribution. He said that he was proud to be a part of the school board team. He felt joinging NCA was a significant move. Wally felt that communication had improved in 3 year. He said it was not perfect and never would be. He said that the Board moved in a positive direction. As to the 2nd question he said that he had a business background and a knowledge of school finances. He thanked everyone for the past years on the board.
dim Reid began with a resume of his business experience. He said that he had moved to Huntley because of the smaller school system. He said that he helped to organize the reft^ndum campaign. He said the staff is doing an extraordinary job and think the Board has done an excellent job with professionalism. Jim went on to say that the administration has brought quality and excellence. He had mixed feelings about the HEA as he does about business unions. However he stated if there were not unions, teachers would not stay in the system. He said that he would try to lessen adversary feelings during negotiations and provide children with the kind of education they deserve.
The question & Answer period began. The 1st question was "There has been talk about a lack of communication. How would you improve this situation between adminstration. board, parents and teachers?"
Judy McLaughlin said thaere was a lack of communication with the board and that the Board had been asked to see LD children before the Vi position was cut and that there would be a meeting with the Board on May 27 but that the parents didn't have a prayer of changing the board.
Betty Conley said that she had gotten to know the children and
