The Board of Education of District 158 and the Huntley Education Association have been in contract negotiations since May 11 of this year. During that time four meetings have been held. At the fourth meeting, the H.E.A. declared "impasse" and requested that the parties seek the services of ap outside mediator.
As is known throughout the community, District 158 has been in the midst of a serious financial crisis. The Board of Education has been working most diligently in an effort to tum this situation around. It is only through the issuance of working cash fun I bonds that the district will Ix able to complete its ope tu t for the
entire 1978-79 school year. In keeping with its commitment to maintain the financial integrity of fhe district, the Board of Education is committed to a balance budget.
Last evening, the 26th of September mediation began through a commissioner provid¬ ed at no cost to the district by the Rockford Office of Federal Mediation and Conciliation Ser¬ vice. At this session, the Board of Education, in a sincere effort to settle the salary issue, made a significant offer to the H.E.A. The offer was a salary increase totaling S24,750.00 which rep¬ resents an increase of 4% over last year's total salary expendit- uies, and increases staff salar¬ ies by an average of S574.00.
The Board has made this significant and reasonable offer in the sincere hope that a settlement can be reached. At the close of the meeting, the H.E.A. reported that they would take the Board's offer under advisement. Another mediation session has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 3.
