VOLUME 19-NUMBER 47 THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28,1980 USPS 580-360 Phone 669-5621 12 PAGES SERVING THE PJBOPLE OF HUNTLEY SINCE 1960 IfcPER^COPY LIONS'S CLUB ZONE MEETING The Huntley American Legion Hall was the site for the Fox River Zone ineeting of District IJ Lions International on February 20th. 150 members were present and were served a Roast Beef Dinner Family Style by the Huntley Legion Auxiliary. The women were give a round of applause for the delicious dinner. Dist. Chaplain Lion John Demlow gave the Invocation. The Dundee Swing Choir entertained before the dinner menu. This was under the direction of Ms. Luann Lamz. Also music was provided by Mr. Russ Miller during the attitude hour. Lions Herb Thurow. Charlie Sass, Charlie Ruth. Dennis Rudsinski. Mel Ewert, Bud Ewert, Dick Kohley, Dick Seiler and others assited in the raffle program and Huntley Pin selling. Thc Lions were welcomed by the Huntley President, Lion Jim Weirich. Lion Dick Price of Elgin, Zone Chairman, introduced the various dignitaries. Lion Bob Ostrom. Past District Governor of District IJ, stressed the importance of reserving rooms for the District Convention April 11 & 12 at ,the Sheraton-O'Hare in Rosemont, II. Also presented was a film on sight and hearing impaired. Lion Jim Addington announced the officer training program to be given during the convention. This includes Leos, Lions and Lionesses. District Govemor George Abbamonto spoke of the goals attained and to be accomplished for the remaining month. Our friend. Deputy Dist. Govemor Fred Schuttie. spoke on the travels he has made to each club. Lion George Grafer of Hanover Park, Deputy District Govemor of the Eastera Region; Zone Chairman Larry Mackey; Floyd Johnson of the Sourthwestern region and Zone Chairman; Past District Governor, Ed Suchy were among those present. Among the former Huntleyites present were Lion Tracy Sunderlage, President of the Woodstock Lions and his Secretary, Dixie O'Hare; Algonquin President John Dehmlow and some of his crew, Ralph Dehmlowm Joe Janlicke, Norm Cardellim Ruffian Druggist Jim Hutchinson, and Dennis Sandbllom. Everyone has a good time with fun and fellowship thanks to the Fun Chairman Herbie Thurow and his light bulb ideas. Lion Jim Weirich presented the travelling trophy for most attendance at Zone meetings to Fox River Grove Lions Club. (Home club is excluded since that club usually would win.) A total of 40 prizes were awarded. Things like a 11 foot pole for the thing you would not touch with a ten footer. For the Lion who has everything an empty cigar box; a gold brick etc. But many bottles of spirits from Union by the way - we had Lions Bud Bauman. Bob Gruel. Monroe Smith and others. RUMMAGE SALE MARCH 14 It's Rummage Sale time again at the 1st Congregational Church sponsored by the Woni- en's Circle. The dates are March 14 (9:00-6:00) and March 15 (9:00-12:00). Bnke sale wUl be on Friday, the Mth from 9:00-?. If you've a head start on your spring cleaning, and found some "treasures" to good to throw away, just call Connie Pfaff at 669-5551, Mary Ellen Ervin at 669-5228 or the church at 669-5711. The Women's Circle will be happy to accfept any donations. Mark those dates on your calendar, March 14 & 151 MOCK TORNADO DRILL On March 4 a mock tomado drill will be held in Huntley according to Huntley Civil Defense Director, Joe Fenali. This will be a state wide drill held in conjunction with the McHenry County Civil Defense with police and firemen partici¬ pating. CRP CLASS MARCH 20 The Huntley American Legion Auxiliary is sponsoring a CPR Class on Thursday. March 20th at 6:30 p.m. The four hour class will be conducted by Dave Veath, Huntley paramedic at the Huntley Fire House. Anyone can attend. MEET CANDIDATES MARCH 18 All Democaratic and Republi¬ can candidates seeking nomina¬ tion in the March 18 primary have been invited to a "Meet the Candidates" meeting spon¬ sored by the McHenry County Farm Bureau at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4. The meeting is open to the public, said Elmer Hill, Union farmer who is chairman, be¬ cause ofthe widespread interest in matters that concern both farm and city people. Continued on Page 6 TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR THE HOBO SHOW There are tickets available for both seatings of the Hobo Show and Dinner. This show is an annual event by the Chancel Choir of the First Congregational Church. On Sat¬ urday, March 1st, the choir, directed by Bill Leggee and accompanied by Marge Mar¬ lowe, will serve a beef stew dinner with all the trimmings, after which they will perform a floor show. The island theme of this 18th annual show promises to make this years' show a most enjoy¬ able one. Songs such as "Song of the Islands", "Jamaica Farewell", "Pearly Shells", and "Banana Boat Song" added to Nancy's "Itsy, Bitsy, Tenny- Weeny, Yellow-Polka Dot Bik¬ ini", a lovely Leslie's "Hula" and Larry and Betsey's "Yellow Bird" are just a sample of this show's musical charms. Add some jokes and "hobo style" door prizes and you have home style entertainment at its best. LEGION BIRTHDAY DINNER Legionnaires of Huntley American Legion Post #673 will join with millions of their fellow members in a globe-spanning celebration ofthe Legion's 61st Birthday during March, Post Commander Donald Hardy an¬ nounced today. Here in Huntley, the 61st Anniversary will be highlighted with special festivities including a Birthday Dinner on Saturday, March 8th at 7:30 P.M. at the Post Home. It will be a roast beef dinner served by the Celas of the Congregational Church. The guest speaker for the night will be Bob Schultz, llth District Comniander and the entertainment will be by the "Huntley Senior Citizen Band."
