Write Your Grand¬ parents Week
Governor James R. Thompson has proclaimed September 13 to 19 as Write Your Grand¬ parents Week in Illinois.
"I have joined with the Illinois Department on Aging in supporting this obser¬ vance, which calls attention to the men and women who so willingly share their values, belief and experienmces with their grandchildren," said Thompson. "Grandparents are a vital part of our lives and we want to recognize their love, special wisdom and judgment."
The Governor said that his office, along with the Illinois Department on Aging, encourages all elementary and junior high schools in the State to become involved in this observance.
"We hope that teachers will promote classroom projects that give students the opportunity to write their grandparents and other older persons who have become a significant and meaningful part of their lives," Thompson said.
"By taking time to brighten the lives of their grand¬ parents with a letter, stu¬ dents not only reinforce their relationships with their grandparents, but also strengthen their writing skills and perhaps learn more about their family heritage," Thompson said.
"Contact with our grand¬ parents through intergenera- tional communication culti¬ vates a better understanding and appreciation of family traditions that can be inval¬ uable in molding future generations," said Janet S.
Otwell, Director of the Illinois Department on Aging. "This also gives older generations a chance to play a vital role in the lives of their grandchildren and also enables youth to see that old age can be looked upon as a positive and dignified time of life".
