A leader of the Landfill Emergency Action Committee - LEAC • Thursday denounced the timing of the hearing scheduled by the County Board on the landfill proposed near Huntley by the Veugder family of Crystal Lake. Area news¬ papers announced Wednesday, December 26 that the hearings would begin January 22, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and would continue on foUowing days until completed. Nancy ^U, LEAC publicity coordinator, stated, "The County Board has sched¬ uled tfae hearings during the day when working people cannot attend. It's absurd and unfair. Last year during tfae Waste Management controversy they scheduled the hearings during the evenings. They should this too." Grau continued, ^lae for the County Boaid ;4ers. Most ofthe members ?tbe Hearing Committee are retired, self-emplo]red, or don't have to woric full time to support themselves. But for tfae people who will suffer if this thing is put near them, it's an imposi¬ tion. We have to take off woric and lose money to fi^t to protect our property values. We have to spend money on experts anji attomeys to present our j^ws. And if the County Board approves the landfill, we'll lose' our investment in our homes." In 1983, because of an application by Waste Manage¬ ment, Inc., to develop a boufflll near Woodstod in Seneca Township, the County Board appointed a spedal committee similar to the one chosen, to review the Veugeler appUcarion. The hearings would have begun November 7, 1983 at 7:00 pm, but Waste Management wi(b- drew its application, ostensibly to give tfae Oounty Board time to complete its waste plan. Tfae Veugeler application, submitted days before tfae County Board was set to receive a new solid waste plan, has been criticized by county environmental and civic groups because tfaey fear it could preempt consideration of the new waste plan. Thiese groups faave called for a voluntary moratorium on private landfill applications until the plan is implemented. James Veugeler, president of McHeniry County Landfill, Inc., tfae ai^licant fortfae landfill, has not 'heeded tfae requests for witfa- drawal. The soHd waste plan was prepued by a consultant wtth tfae faelp of an Advisoiy Committee of lacal citizens. Veugeler served as a member of tfaat Committee. She said, "We're going to protest. It's uofsii, and we w(m't stand for it." LEAC has retained tiie Costal Lake firm oi Cowlia, UiBguarrty. KuUa, and Curran to r<ipresent it in the hearing. Grau also said the group would faire otiier experts to critique the application, LEAC mend>«ns fear tiie landfill will contaminate groundwater, reduce pioperty values, and open the door to the ^posal of Chicago waste in McHenry County. The nezt LEAC Steoing Committee meeting is sched¬ uled fbr January 2nd at 7:30 at tiie Huntiey ViUage HaU.
