Pre iiuntletf Mtmslhe Your Home Town Newspaper USPS580-36G THURSDSAY, APRIL 25,1985 VOLUME 26-NUMBER 4 SERVING THE PEOPLE OP HUNTLEY SINCE 1960 JE^ g.Q'^^^^fa^e Team Goes To State Competition District 158 Receives North Central Accrediation Huntley School Distrid 158 has received notice that the school's North Central Assodation accreditation has been extended through the 1984-85 school year foUowing the review and approval of its Annual Report at the Assoda¬ tlon's Annual Meeting. Accredi¬ tation is for one year at a time and must be renewed annually. Dr. John S. Kemp, NCA SUte Dh^dor at the University of Illinois, congratulated the Hunt¬ ley School distrid on its continued accreditation for 1984-85. He added, "The school and community should be proud of the accreditation, for this provides assurance that the school meets those minimal yet rigorous preconditions for effective education established by the Association. Through thia voluntary membership in the NCA, the school and the people in the distrid have committed themselves to the pursuit of quality in education." The North Central Associa¬ tion, which was founded in 1895, is the largest of the country's regional accrediting agendes. It is a voluntary organization of over 5,500 schools and 900 colleges and universities hi 19 states, plus the Department of Defense Dependent Schools throughout the world. 644 schools are accredited in Illinois. NCA accreditation helps build public confidence by providing evidence to the public as well as to other schools and educttional institutions that the school is meeting expedations and fiilfill- The Huntley FFA Horticulture Team competed in the Illinois FFA Horticulture Contest on Saturday, April 20th. The contest was held at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaigne JCuapaa. Huntley's team consists of five members: Lynette Fettes, Monica Fettes, Tod Freeberg, Janis Jones, and Jennifer Massett. Also attending will be Melissa Massett and Gwen Ziller, who have pradiced and competed with the team in previous contests. The contest was fai three parts. The first part consisted of a fifty question general horticulture exam. Next, the contestants must identify 50 plant specimens that are chosen from a list that contains 201 items. The third sedion of the contest includes eight judging rings of materials such as: cut flowers, ground covers, flowering pot crops, deciduous trees, annuals and perienials. The seven member horticulture group is by no means "green" fat die area of competition. The first conted held this year was at Joliet Junior College. Jennifer Massett, Lynette Fettes, and Monica Fettes competed. Lynette placed first individually. The Sedion 6 FFA Horticulture Contest held on March 14 found the team in first place with Janis Jones 1st individually, Lynette Fettes 2nd individually, Jennifer Massett 7th and Monica Fettes 14. Tlie team competed hi the College of Lake County contest on March 19th and placed 3rd. The Metropolitan Agriculture and Horticulture Teachers Assodation contest was held on April 12 at Morton Arboreitum. The team placed 3rd> and Lynette Fettes placed 3rd individually. The team appredates the efforts of their advisor Mr. Chester Nelson, and their coaches Mark Martin and Jim Frost, McHenry County College Horticulture Students. 25c per copy ing not only local standards but also those more widely accepted throughout the region and the nation. The meeting was caUed to order by the President at 7:35 pm. Upon roU caU the following answered present: Mrs. Basel, Mrs. Schadt, Mr. Greve, Mr. Freeberg, Mr. Heavy, and Mr. Zfa'k. Absent: Mr. Bauman. All present jofaied in the Pledge to the Flag. Mr. Greve moved Mr. Heavey 2nd to approve the minutes of the March 14 regular meeting with corrections; 6 Yeas - 0 Nays, Motion carried. 2. Mrs. Schadt moved Mr. Heavey 2nd to approve the minutes of the March 14 Executive Session as written. 7 Yeas - 0 Nays, Motion carried. Mr. Bauman havfaig joined the meeting at 7:30 p.m. 3. Mr. Freeberg moved Mrs. Basel 2nd to approve and adopt the Canvass of Election. Yeas: Freeberg, Basel, Schadt, Greve, Bauman, Zfak, and Heavey, Nays: None, 7 Yeas - 0 Nays, Motion carried. 4. Contfaiued on Page 2 Horticulture Team Places Second In State The Huntley FFA Horticul¬ ture Team competed fai the State FFA Horticulture Contest on Saturday April 20, 1985. The team placed second in the state, and have now won the right to pmpete fai the National Contest Kansas City, Missouri during the National FFA Convention. Jennifer Massett placed 1st faidividually, Lynette Fettes placed 5th faicUviduaUy, and Monica Fettes placed 7th individually. Janis Jones and Todd Freeberg were also on the team. Ahemates attending the contest were Gwen ZiUer and Meliss Massett. The team has put in several hours preparing for the contest and would like to thank thefa advisor Mr. Chester Nelson, and also thefa coaches Jim Frost and Mark Martfai. MCC agriculture majors. Blood Drive April 29 A Blood Drive is befaig conducted by personnel of th Aurora Area Blood Bank on Monday, April 29 betweeen 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the CoUege Lounge at McHenry County CoUege. Donkey Basketball Game Pidured above is a scene from the Donkey BaskdbaU Game held at the Huntley High School last Saturday night. In the first Game the FFA beat the Boosters 4 to 2. Second game was won in overtime Faculty -10, FFA - 8. Tae decisive game Photo by John Repaskey was between the FFA and the Faculty which ended; FFA - 8, Faculty - 2.
