Scott O'Brien A Tuesday afternoon homeward commute may be delayed in Huntley if a trainload of cars is on its way from Belvidere to Chicago. This Tuesday was no exception, but had an unusual twist. At approximately 4:25 p.m., as the afternoon train was rolling through Huntley, the driver of a green Mercedes Benz was unable to stop as he approached the crossing on Mill Street. Consequently, he rammed into the side of the empty auto train. The Huntley Police, as well as the Fire Department, arrived on the scene within minutes. The driver and Mercedes sustained minor injuries. The worst injury was to the Stop Sign, which was fatally wounded. The Illinois State Scholarship Commission recently announced the 1987-88 Illinois State Scholars. Of this year's Scholars, eight are students at Huntley High School, although program participation by high test scores and high school class rank sent to ISSC for consideration in the popular program. About 10% are named State Scholars and will receive a Certificate of Achievement for the accomplishment at this spring's honor night. In order to enter the competition, high school students must take the ACT and/or SAT examination between January 1 and June 30 of their junior year of high school and have the scores sent to the ISSC. Selection of Scholars is based on a combination of their test scores and their class rank at the end of the junior year. Nearly all will continue their education after high school. Huntley's State Scholars include: JuUe Bunt, Cassie Evans, Eileen Manning, Marci Maxwell, Jodi Peterson, Larry Rugg, Ron Terry and Judy Wiesneth. Planning Board Meeting Minutes The regular monthly meeting of the Huntley Planning Commission was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Wilmer Rohlwing. Those members of the board present were Noel Hansmann, Ron Hahn, Robert Schachtner and Jack Daum. Mayor Dhamer and Village Building Inspector Spradlin were also present. The minutes of the last meeting of December 8, 1986 were read. Mr. Schachtner moved to accept the minutes as read. Mr Hansmann seconded. Motion carried. Mike and Jeff Grismer were present to present new plans for their lots on Myrtle Street. The new plans included five buildings of four units each. The front of the buildings would be 1 1/2 stories tall and the back 2 stories because of drop in elevation. Each building would be on its own lot and have two entries. The density would be just under 20 people per acre, based on 2 1/2 per unit. Tom Jurs entered the meeting at this time. The plans showed smaller garages than those presented at last meeting, but the same parking stalls. Mr Daum then asked about the distance between buildings which shows only 18 feet, according to codes this cannot be less than 40 feet. "There would be two units upstairs and two units downstairs. Each unit would have one stall inside garage and one out. They have sewer access all around them. The sewer is on edge of property which comes into the property approximately 10-15 feet. The total lots combined equal 2 1/2 acres. The one corner will be left a green area. 108 feet is green area altogether. Mr Grismer said that when the ditch is installed it will be lower yet for water so all water will go towards detention pond by highway. The Village Engineer will determine if they need a detention pond. Mr Daum referred to page 47 concerning the spacing between the buildings and can they have less than 50 feet between buildings. Mr Grismer said he cojuld move the buildings so there would be more space in between. When asked about foundations being higher because this was considered a flood plain area, it was determined that this property is no longer considered a flood plain area. The buildings are 30 feet from lot lines. The Grismers are here tonight requesting an R-S, apartments, zoning. Mr Joe Manning, who lives Continued on page 6
