SCHOd. BOARD NEWS
In JiBW at 1972 Congress pass¬ ed THle IX of the E^ucaiioo Amendments which prohibits di»- cnmuiation by sex in all feder¬ ally^ Amded educational programs. Fimd rules and regulations t» Title IX were pUblishied in the •prinf of 1976 by tlte Depart¬ ment of Health, Education and .Welfare and the Office for Civil VigbL Tbe Hundey School Sys. ton, akoo; wU bevery other piA>- Bc scbool system in tbe United States, is itffected by this new iam.
One of the main «reas the Distriot No. 158 is working on «t the present time is a co-edu- OBtlooal physical education pro¬ gram IQ our junior high schooL Titte IX requires this program to be in openXkm by the isU of 1976. With tbe exception of oertaia skill r contact sports, a ooa-discrtBiinetory physkai'edu- catkn prograin, both in P.E. classes and sports, must t>e de- velofieb in both Junior High aind ^Cfa ScbooL
^ To satisfy tfaeae requirement (the scbool board is reviewing oiu'' available facilities and our total distriot pngram.
At pre&ant, we do not meet Title IX reqaireiAents «t the Jun- for High level, as there is ao aport availaUe fkn* girls. "Dye board is ourrently looking at var¬ ious pnssi^ties to correct tfais violaition. Our high school pro¬ gram must aita be evaluated and >po5£tUe changes will be made. A pilot, higb school oo-ed P.E. program will be staft'ad in the scboiol this fall. Title IX has given txs a longer time limit for total ohanges on the high sdiool leve4. ..The new gyro, which will be connoted this fall, will help us meet our Title IX requiremreot:!. The new building bousss two full size baskett>aiU courts, tfaree volleyball courts, two complete locker rooms and a balcony which can be used for various activities. iQassroom s^ce is al^ avall- lUe.
The new facility imay seem ov¬ erly large to many, however, the board felt it necessary to look towards the future wfaen build¬ ing' the gymnasiuni. Realidng the expense ot snch a facility the board wanted the original struc¬ ture to be adequate for tbe fd- ture growth of the area. The moveable equipmat of a gym must be purchased from tfae Edu¬ cational Fund which also pmv chases such tilings as tea!±era Betiviceai books, p^peis Mid utili¬ ties. As stated in other articles, Huotiey, as weQ cb other sefanol districts, are facing a aiiorta«re^ in Ibis fund. Therefore, die dls- trfe^will not be able to famnedf- ately''porefaaie desirable eqttfp- toesst
