It ha become evident that over the las few years there has been a large num ber of non-area persons coming to Huntley to make purchases. The ma¬ jority of these people are good, honest people who will do business in all sin¬ cerity. At this time 1 would like to warn all business people that due to this increased number there are always a small few who are here to take ad¬ vantage of you, get your money and leave, never to be seen again. One method used by this minority is to cash checks that are either overdrawn, stolen, and/or torged, A methcxl of • combating this type of theft is to fol¬ low strict rules when cashing checks. A simple way that would not only be effective, but also not offend the good customers is to obtain as much information about the person ca.shing the check as possible, which would in¬ clude the person's drivers license num¬ ber, correct address, telephone num¬ ber, and possibly the license plate number of the vehicle they are driving. There are standard rubber stamps that can be purchased for stamping the back of the check for this type of in¬ formation. For local residents it may be more appropriate to start a check cashing card system. It is also suggest¬ ed that you not cash a check for any amount above the amount of mer¬ chandise purchased. Remember, the honest person who is sincere not only would not mind this procedure but very often expects it. If the police department can be of help establish¬ ing any system you may select, you have only but to call. Thank you lor your cooperation.
