Lions Award Night

At the Lions Award Night on June Uth, Joe Schaller was presented with a plaque naming him the 1989 Huntley "Lion of the Year." Presenting the plaque for this high honor, Norman Brettschneider recalled the story of Joe's life and the many attributes that qualified him for this special award.

.   Cheverons for long term membership were presented to 10 year: Warren Hansen, Barry Bochart, Richard Frick, Donald Tessmer, James Mattingly and Donald Enstrom.
15 yfear: Alva Allen, Richard Swanson and Richard Kohley.
20 year: Delwin Borhart, Edward Hartmann and John Mattingly.
Awards for long term perfect attendance were presented to: James Mattingly, Lawrence Fettes and Donald Tessmer for 10 years, Richard Kohley for 15 years, Del Borhart and Norman Brettschneider for 20 years.
Amy Meyer Star Farmer
At the 61st Annual Convention of the Illinois Association of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) held at the University of Illinois, Champaign, June 13 to 15, Amy Meyer of the -     Huntley FFA Chapter was awarded the State FFA Degree and received recognition as the Star Farmer of Section VI. The state Farmer Degree is the highest FFA Award given in the State of Illinois; the top .02% of all Illinois FFA Members achieve this degree. Amy was also elected as the 1989-90 Section VI Vice-President.
Amy is the daughter of Elmer and Rae Meyer of Huntley; a 1989 graduate of the Huntley High School and in the fall will be attending Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, majoring in agriculture.
85th Birthday Open House Thank You
To my dear relatives for giving me my beautiful 85th birthday open house, to my many relatives and friends who were present, for the beautiful cards, gifts, flowers, well wishes and many kindnesses - may I express my heartfelt gratefuUness. X shall cherish all the loving memories the rest of the years of my Ufe which God grants to me. Again may I express my deepest gratitude.

May Chesak's 85th Birthday Celebration
The words that were repeated over and over Sunday afternoon at May Chesak's 85th birthday party were enthusiasm, laughter, strength and love. And they do describe the "Grand Lady of Huntley" who was honored at a reception given by her sisters, brother, nieces, and nephews at the First Congregational Church of Huntley on June 11th.
More than 230 friends and family members came to thank May for touching their lives with encouragement and joy, either in one of the classrooms she taught in her 51 year career, through the many organizations of which she is a part, her church work, or through the special love she has for her family.
May's nephew, Wendell Weltzien, opened a short program by telling of May's years of teaching in the Oak Glen School, Huntley, and Greenwood School districts. He then introduced Mrs. , Marilyn Eckman, who represented the Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Eckman noted that the president would normally be thanking May for all her years of dedicated work, but since May is president, she got to do the honors. May was also extended special birthday wishes by James "Barney" Manning, Commander of the American Legion. Fran Borhart of the Lioness organization, and Kerry Ellison of the Lions Club. Each speaker thanked May for her leadership, and for her willingness to tackle any task with a smile on her face.
Next Herb Eggers thanked May for all the time and talent she has given to the First Congregational Church in the 48 years she has been a member. May taught Sunday School for 14 years, sang in the choir for 20 years, was Ladies Aid president for 15 years, and has been the memorial committee of one since 1953.
Dr. Robert Bunt, Superintendent of the Huntley School district, presented May with a gold pin in appreciation to her for being a "friend of the Huntley School district." Although May has been retired for many years, she has never lost her inteest in children, teachers, and anything that concerns education. She takes bushels of apples to the schools for teacher appreciation day each year, announces the Girls State delegates at the awards ceremony each year, and this last year served as Grand Marshall of the Homecoming Parade and also gave the Commencement address to the 1989 graduating class.
The last person to pay tribute to May was her niece, Sharon Boncosky Churchill, who spoke on behalf of all of May's family. Sharon thanked all who came to make this such a special day for her Aunt May and then shared some family stories and remembrances. "Aunt May has loved all the children she taught and her friends and neighbors, but she always saved her special love for her family," Sharon said. "Every child should be lucky enough to have an Aunt May and Uncle Arnie."   Sharon, speaking for everyone there, expressed her love and thanks to Aunt May for sharing her joy of life, her sense of humor, her strength and courage, and her ready smile with all who have been fortunate enough to know her.
