Miss Martin was a^?^ snip of a girl, just ont of Huntley High School when she got her first teaching job at Freeman Station near Huntley. She was also jani¬ tor of the one-room building where she taught all eight grades and tended the wood stove. She came to school on a trolly car, called the "Belvidere Line" which became extinct with the emergence of the automobile. Her next teach¬ ing assignment was at the Kish¬ waukee School, anoth^ one roon^ school, ahd then at t&e ^uiMl^ ^' Grade School. Her fatjler.^ai |^j ' come an invalid and |he famfly had moved to town.
From time to time she took col¬ lege work at the University of Chicago and at De Pauw Unit«r- sity in Indiana during sumtner vacation, but she fcegan to feel an urge to be a btisiiwss woman —something a little uncommon then so she took a business cour¬ se too. She was about to give up teaching and launch into a new career when the Huntley High School principal talked her into using her new training by con¬ tinuing as a teacher of commercial subjects. That was in 1918 and she has taught typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping ever since. In addition, she has directed many class plays, handled the school activity fund, and was the ad¬ viser for the school yearbook.
Miss Martin is proud of h«r stadents, for many of them hai* important positions in indostiy, ¦Oie federal govemment, aroMd services, and, jjfc itfej hrnlrs and
