July 29 Benefit For Dan Schaller "A Day in the Park" benefit for Dan "Monkey" Schaller is scheduled for Saturday, July 29, beginning at noon in Huntley's Deicke Park. The event includes roast pig with accompanying side-dishes and refreshments. The Huntley Jaycees will be directing the childrens games, which will include a candy scramble, balloon toss and various races. Games will begin about 2:00 and small prizes will be awarded. A schedule will be posted at the park. Music is provided by disc jockey Mike Hoffman and the band "Toby Berry and the Sportsmen". Tickets are $10 with all proceeds going to Dan and his wife, Julie. Tickets are available at Huntley Supermarket, Parkside Tap, Realty World, Village Inn and S.S. Clipper in Huntley; American Bar ii Grill in Gilberts; and The Cottage and The Clip Joynt in Crystal Lake. Dan got his nickname (Monkey) because he was good at climbing trees. His tragic fall on March 31 at a Marengo construction site resulted in a broken neck and damage to his spinal column. He spent a month in the hospital. Eventually transported to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago he's been undergoing I therapy on his arms, legs and shoulders to keep the muscles mobile. Though there is some feeling in his biceps, he is paralyzed from the chest down. Schaller is concentrating on being able to work computer and typewriter keyboards. The insurance is taking care of most of the medical expenses but other expenses must also be met. They plan to use the benefit money to remodel their newly built home in Lake-in-the-HiUs. He needs a special lift, costing about $6,000, to reach the second floor. Doorways must be widened and the bathroom made handicap accessible. It's wonderful to see how one town came together for one person. As Julie Schaller said, "He has the best friends in the entire world. It really chokes you up." SEE YOU THERE-AT THE FAIR!
