About 60 McHenry County oflkials met for a dinner meeting at Mar¬ tinetti's in Crystal Lake on Thurs¬ day, August 6. The maps which were made by the McHenry County Soil and Water Conservati<m Dis¬ trict of Grafton Township were pre¬ sented to the Board of Supervisors. The cost of preparing the maps, which point out the typograjAy of the land and suggest what it is' best suited for. Should it be used for urban planning or for agricul¬ ture or industry.
Kenneth Frish b the diairman of the county group.
He said that in March of 1964 a similar meeting was held and at this time the Planning Com¬ mision iia'l just come iirto exist¬ ance. The question asked at that time was, "How are we going to plan our cities and towns? Shall we use the present metropolitan system, foUowing the present loca¬ tion of th9 cities or the plans of {M*ivate individuals or the Metro¬ politan Planning ConHnistoH?"
Then a new method was sug¬ gested, using a SOIL INFORXL\- TION as a guide as to which was the best for agriculture, urban dc- veloiMnent, industry, etc.
McH-^nry County had just had their Eoi! maps published, showing difTerent soil* in the county with different colors indicating where the gravel, lay, what land was apt to flood which was the richest land for femtilig etc. Therefore it was suggest©)! that "We become guiepa pigs ior the entire United States aa to^ow to plan cities according to soil conditions. This suggestion waa put befwe the McHenry Coimty Board of su|)ervisors who said "Lets try,it as long as it doesnt cost tiiait^ money."
TVo yeiffs lat^ tiie soil's inter- pitetitiM for the couoty were com¬ pleted. At tliis time Mr. John Quay a profesMODal planner, wee hired to determine what was tix best tue for Qie land in McHenry County. This means taUng Ao tatfoioution Uiat we already had and re-groi4>- ing it according to economic and social uses.
Hie Planning CommissiMi asked if the Soil and Water CMnmissi'-n
would take this project on as a special pro.^flct. which they did, and this and Lhe district each shouldered one-half of the expenses.
We hope, said Fisk, tbat the Board of Supervisors will waot to have-^lMpfltfHMMWMliiiM^^^MKMKft-
