Huntley Fire Department Celebrates EMS Week 1991
Huntley Library District Hires Librarian
By Tracey Schwartz
The members of the Huntley Fire Department extend an invitation to the entire community to an evening of fun (and some education) at the 1st Annual EMS Week Open House on Wednesday, May 15 from 7-9pm. Village President Jim Dhamer has officially proclaimed the week of May 12-18 as "Emergency Medical Services Week" in Huntley.
The Open House theme will focus on Seat Belt Safety and Infant Restraint. Nationally known "dummies", Vince and Larry, will explain and demonstrate proper use and securing of infant car seats plus how and why seat belts are used in cars. In addition, there will be demonstrations of HFPD's new heavy duty rescue truck including extraction equipment for car accidents.
Huntley Fire Department personnel will be available to talk, give safety/accident prevention tips and answer questions about just what EMS is and does for the Huntley community. Refreshments will be served and door prizes awarded. For the kids there will be "fun" fact stickers, balloons, pencils, etc.
Also, Fire Department personnel will be doing public blood pressure checks at Station 1 during EMS Week Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm, during the Open House and Saturday, May 18, 8am-12pm.
This will commemorate the first oflicial nationwide EMS Week and the 20th anniversary of EMS in Illinois. It was 1971 when the EMS Act established a set of rules and regulations regarding pre-hospital emergency treatment in Illinois. Prior to this legislature, there

were no certified paramedics or field treatment guidelines in Illinois.
In 1975 Huntley initiated its. first ALS (Advanced Life Support) and paramedic service. Huntley Fire Chief Dave Veath is the only remaining paramedic from that initial paramedic service.
Currently in Huntley there are 13 paramedics and 7 EMTA's (Emergency Medical Technician Ambulance). Training for EMTA's runs approximately 4 months and paramedic certification takes 18 months to 2 years. Training in both cases is intensive and in depth, covering all facets of emergency service. All
EMTA's and paramedics are state licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health. They practice medicine "directly under" the medical license of one doctor (Project Medical Director, PMD) who coordinates the resource hospital system for their area.
PMD Mark S. Gibson, from Sherman Hospital, the hub of the Greater Elgin Area Medical Intensive Care (MIC) System under which Huntley operates, assumes direct responsiblity for the actions in the field of over 300 EMTA's and paramedics in that system. He is assisted by Joanne Foley, MIC Coordinator

April 14-20 is National Library Week and Huntley has a very special reason to celebrate. The Huntley Library Board recently hired their first official librarian, Jane Thompson. She is a recent graduate of University of Wisconsin with a Masters in Library Science. Ms. Thompson began studying Library Science as a result of volunteer work with older people in the Minneapolis Public Library's Homebound Program, both in the field and the management of the
program.
Her previous experience includes careers as an English/speech teacher and as a legal secretary. Knowledge and experiences acquired in these fields provide her with a strong background for establishing a new and vital library for Huntley.
Ms. Thompson is expected to be moved in and actively working by June 1, 1991. She is very enthusiastic about the job and is looking forward to meeting the people of Huntley.
