Jane Thompson, recently hired aa the Huntley Area Public Library District Director, has begun sharing an office with Road Commissioner Bob Hight in the Grafton Township Offices at 10109 North Vine. Thompson who comes to Huntley from Little Rock, Arkansas, is the latest result of efforts by the Huntley Area Library District Board to create a library in Huntley. Hiring a librarian is a key element in making the Huntley Library a reality. Thompson who has a Masters Degree in Library Science (MLS), says one of her first priorities will be to distribute library cards, which will be available to the public after June 12th. Thompson will be issuing library cards 9am-llam June 11th at the Friends of the Library Summer Reading Program taking place at Deicke Park. In addition, she will be setting up office times when the residents can stop in to get a card. According to Thompson, her next priority will be to determine a book selection policy and begin the business of creating a book collection. This will entail a market study to determine the needs of the community and what the collection emphasis should be. Thompson anticipates Huntley will require a strong children's and young adult collection, not as strong reference materials, and generally a more recreational focus, as opposed to a research forcus. A portion of the collection will be donated by the Crystal Lake Library and individuals. So far two books have been officially donated to the library. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Thompson has been very active in library organizations since 1973 when she began work with Friends of the Minneapolis Library. She worked with the Home Bound Program which took books to shut-ins and handicapped people. In 1989 she decided to become a librarian. In addition to her MLS from the University of Wisconsin, Thompson has a Masters Degree in Speech Communication from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, and a Bachelors Degree in English from University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Thompson has taught high school English courses in rural Wisconsin and taught Communications courses at the University of Nebraska. "Huntley is a sweet little town," says Thompson, "Thi* is a wonderful project. It is new, everyone's interested and there will be much input from the community." Thompson feels this is a great opportunity for her as well as for Huntley. "A town is in a way defined by its library ... its heart, soul and its archive."
