The public is invited to the 35th Annual Osawan Pow Wow to be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 17 it 18 at the Wulf Farm on Rt. 23 4 miles north of Rt. 20 in Marengo.
The Pow Wow features traders of American Indian Arts it Crafts open Saturday 12pm-5pm and 6pm-? and Sunday llam-7pm; and native foods including Indian frybread, Indian taco's and com soup. A Midnight Auction of Indian goods will be held Saturday at midnight. In addition, there will be a craft contest on Saturday afternoon, a tipi contest on Sunday afternoon and Indian dancing all day Saturday and Sunday.
The Osawan Pow Wow is sponsored by The Mascoutin Society of Chicagoland and has been held on the Wulf Farm for the last 4 years. The Mascoutin Society is a non-proflt organization and the Pow Wow is free. The
Society raises money for many different causes. Scholarship funds, Indian schools, and Indian shelters are a few.
You may be sisking what is Pow Wow? A Pow Wow is a gathering of Native Americans, mix bloods (ie: German, English or LaKota Souix) and their friends. They come together to share their culture, to make new friends, to see old ones and to spend time with extended family.
The main attraction of the Pow Wow is the "Drum." The Drum is a group of men and women who play instruments and sing traditional songs in the Native tongue. The Drum is often located in the center of the arena under an arbor. In addition, there is usually a Host Drum who leads off the singing. There is a Grand Entry, parading around the arena in single file behind the American Flag.

Jaycees Dave Cates and Mark Mercer adjust the swings on the new addition at Ol' Timer's Park. The swingset was donated by the Huntley Jaycees, G.F. Structures and J.S. Riemer and assembled by' the Jaycees.
The Dancers, many in traditional dress, post the colors, pray, sing and dance in many different styles of Indian dance including the Indian 2-step which early colonists loved so that most non-Indians know it as the Virginia Reel!
Pow Wow etiquette is very important.
* Reserved seats are covered with a blanket.
* Do not enter the arena without permission of the arena director.
* Do not enter a tipi without first scratching the canvas.
* Always keep your pet on a leash, keep your children under supervision and keep the Pow Wow grounds neat.
